The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is a 14-inch business laptop platform, not a single fixed configuration. Lenovo’s November 2016 specifications list 6th-generation Intel processors, two DDR3L memory sockets and several storage, display, graphics and battery options. If you are buying or upgrading one, identify the exact machine type and installed parts first: the T460 name alone does not tell you which screen, drive interface or battery it has.

What is the ThinkPad T460?

The T460 is a 14-inch ThinkPad platform specified by Lenovo in November 2016. Its listed processors are the Intel Core i3-6100U, i5-6200U, i5-6300U, i7-6500U and i7-6600U; Lenovo identifies the i7-6500U for discrete-graphics models only. Integrated graphics are Intel HD Graphics 520. Some US configurations offered an NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with 2 GB of memory. These are platform options, not components present in every T460.

Lenovo gives the chassis dimensions as 339 × 232.5 × 21 mm. Weight depends on the configuration: the specification lists 1.73 kg for an integrated-graphics, non-touch model with two 3-cell batteries, and 1.94 kg for a discrete-graphics, multi-touch model with a 3-cell internal and 6-cell external battery. Those figures should not be treated as the weight of every T460.

Which display and ports does it have?

Display options

Lenovo lists two 14-inch anti-glare LED panel options: HD at 1366 × 768 and 200 nits, or FHD IPS at 1920 × 1080 and 250 nits. Optional in-cell multi-touch was also available. Check the installed panel before buying: the model name does not guarantee FHD resolution, IPS, or touch.

Ports and external displays

The platform specification lists three USB 3.0 ports, one with Always On charging; Mini DisplayPort; HDMI; Ethernet (RJ-45); a docking connector; and a 4-in-1 media reader. Lenovo says the T460 supports three independent displays. Its listed maximums are 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz through DisplayPort using a Mini DisplayPort cable, and 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz through HDMI.

Wireless hardware varies by configuration. Wi-Fi is configuration-dependent, while WWAN and WiGig were optional rather than universal features.

Can you upgrade the T460’s RAM?

Yes. Lenovo specifies two DDR3L SO-DIMM sockets, dual-channel capable, with up to 32 GB of PC3-12800 memory rated at 1600 MHz. This gives you a clear memory type and speed to look for: DDR3L-1600 laptop SO-DIMM memory. Lenovo’s platform specification is not a compatibility list for every third-party module, so confirm your machine type and the module details before ordering.

Can you upgrade or replace its storage?

Potentially, but the correct drive depends on the installed interface and physical fit. Lenovo lists 2.5-inch SATA hard drives in 7 mm or 9.5 mm heights, SATA 6.0 Gb/s SSDs, and PCIe 3.0 × 2 NVMe SSDs on some configurations. It also lists an 8 GB NAND SSHD option for Western Europe.

Do not assume every T460 supports NVMe or that any particular SSD will fit. Before purchasing a drive:

  1. Identify the machine type and determine which drive is currently installed.
  2. Check its interface and form factor, including the height if it is a 2.5-inch drive.
  3. Use Lenovo’s machine-specific parts lookup to check the relevant part information before choosing a replacement.

The T460 platform specification describes options across the model family; it does not verify compatibility for a particular used laptop or third-party drive.

What battery does a T460 use, and how long does it last?

Lenovo lists an optional integrated 3-cell, 23 Wh battery and external lithium-ion batteries in 3-cell, 23 Wh or 6-cell, 48 Wh and 72 Wh versions. The exact compatible replacement depends on the machine type and configuration. Use Lenovo’s parts lookup to check the applicable FRU and any substitutions rather than relying on a broad model name or an unverified marketplace listing.

Lenovo’s 2016 specification gives maximum battery-life figures measured with MobileMark 2014. For an integrated-graphics model, it lists up to 10.8 hours with a 6-cell 48 Wh external battery, 15.3 hours with a 6-cell 72 Wh external battery, and 20.2 hours with a 3-cell internal plus 6-cell 72 Wh arrangement. The corresponding discrete-graphics figures are 10.5, 15.0 and 19.7 hours. These are manufacturer test results for the platform, not a runtime promise for a used laptop; actual runtime depends on the condition of its batteries and how it is used.

Which power adapter does it need?

Lenovo lists 45 W and 65 W Slim AC adapters for the platform. Before replacing one, check the connector and exact model compatibility for your machine rather than choosing by wattage alone.

How should you check a used T460 before buying?

Compare the actual unit’s configuration and condition rather than relying on the T460 name. Ask the seller or inspect the machine for:

  • Processor and whether it has integrated or discrete graphics.
  • Screen resolution, panel type and whether touch is installed.
  • Installed memory and storage, including the drive interface.
  • Battery health and which internal or external battery configuration is included.
  • The included power adapter and its compatibility.
  • Machine type, which helps identify compatible parts and configuration details.

The platform specifications establish which options existed, but they do not establish the condition, current parts availability, or selling price of a particular refurbished unit.

Where to find repair instructions and part information

Lenovo’s T460 support documentation index lists a Hardware Maintenance Manual dated 3 November 2017. Use that manual for service procedures, and use Lenovo’s T460 service-parts information and machine-specific Parts Lookup to identify parts and check FRU or substitution details. A model-level parts page does not by itself confirm that a particular item is currently available or fits your machine.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
