Yes. Lenovo’s Legion Go S SteamOS model was described by Valve as the first handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. That claim is about an authorized, supported shipping configuration—not the first handheld capable of running SteamOS or another Linux gaming system.
What “first officially licensed” means
At CES 2025, Lenovo called its SteamOS Legion Go S the world’s first officially licensed handheld powered by SteamOS. Valve used a more precise formulation: the Go S was the “first handheld officially licensed to ship with Valve’s SteamOS.” Valve’s announcement therefore supports a claim about official licensing and shipping support, not a claim that no other handheld can run SteamOS.
Valve said it was working to fully support the Go S and that this work could improve compatibility with other handhelds. Compatibility is distinct from official licensing: a device’s ability to run an operating system does not by itself make it an officially supported SteamOS product.

Valve describes SteamOS as “an operating system built by Valve” and says it is designed to provide a gaming-optimized experience while retaining PC power and flexibility. Lenovo lists Steam Store and Library access, cloud saves, and Remote Play among the SteamOS model’s features. These are platform and manufacturer descriptions, not a guarantee of particular frame rates, game compatibility, or battery life.

How to identify the SteamOS configuration
Legion Go S is a product family, not a single operating-system configuration. Lenovo’s announcement lists Go S platforms with Ryzen Z2 Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors. Lenovo’s current PSREF for model family 8ARP1 lists Z2 Go configurations with Windows 11 or SteamOS. Availability and specifications depend on the country and exact SKU.
Check the product listing or model number before buying, and confirm the operating system and processor together. A Windows Go S listing is not evidence that the device is an officially supported SteamOS configuration, and Lenovo’s materials do not promise that every Windows model can be converted into one.

Published hardware specifications
Lenovo’s PSREF for the Go S family lists the following specifications. They describe the product, not independent test results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Lenovo’s PSREF also gives a maximum battery-life figure of 15.4 hours for local 1080p video playback at 150 nits under its stated test conditions. That is not a gameplay estimate; Lenovo notes that actual runtime varies with configuration, software, wireless use, power management, and screen brightness.

What to verify before buying
- Operating system: Confirm that the exact listing says SteamOS if that is the version you want.
- Processor and configuration: Check the SKU for its processor, memory, storage, and included charger; options differ by region.
- Local terms and availability: Lenovo’s CES announcement and later “Now Available” post are historical and do not establish current stock, price, or delivery timing. The Lenovo PSREF warns that specifications may vary by region and change without notice.
- Accessories: Lenovo names a Legion Go Dock and screen protector, and the PSREF documents USB4/DisplayPort and microSD support. Before choosing a dock, card, or protector, check the exact product listing for fit, ports, power, and regional compatibility.
Why Valve’s wording matters beyond this model
The Go S gave Valve a first officially licensed handheld shipping with SteamOS beyond Valve’s own hardware, while Valve said its support work could help compatibility on other handhelds. Those statements should not be read as a blanket promise that every handheld will receive official SteamOS support. For the Legion Go S itself, the reliable distinction is between an officially shipping SteamOS SKU and other configurations or devices that may be compatible.
