If a Lenovo HR630X or HR650X does not detect a Samsung PM9A3, the available documentation does not confirm that the drive is supported in every configuration—or establish that the SSD is faulty. First identify the exact server and drive, then find the layer where detection stops. The backplane, PCIe wiring, controller, or controller profile may be the issue.

Start by identifying the exact server and SSD

“HR630X” or “HR650X” and “PM9A3” are family names, not enough to confirm a supported combination. Record the server’s machine type and the information on the SSD label: model or option part number, form factor, capacity, and the bay or slot where it is installed.

Lenovo’s PM9A3 guide, updated March 5, 2024, describes multiple drive options and server compatibility tables. The available tables do not establish PM9A3 support for HR630X or HR650X. Check the exact drive part number against support information for the exact server machine type before concluding that it is compatible or ordering a replacement.

Find the first place the drive disappears

Check each detection layer separately and note whether the PM9A3 appears. A drive visible in one tool is not necessarily available to another: Lenovo’s troubleshooting advisory describes cases where a drive may appear in XCC inventory but not in LXPM.

  • PM9A3 SSD 2.5 U.2 NVME GEN 4 960GB
  • System firmware or UEFI
  • Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) inventory
  • Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager (LXPM)
  • The operating system
  • The RAID utility or configuration interface

Write down the first layer where the drive is absent. If it appears in firmware or XCC but not LXPM, for example, that is a different symptom from being absent from hardware inventory entirely.

Verify the NVMe backplane and PCIe path

A carrier fitting into a bay does not prove that the bay is wired for NVMe. Lenovo states that NVMe SSDs require an NVMe-capable backplane and a PCIe connection to the processors, provided through an adapter or cable. Confirm the installed backplane and trace the relevant PCIe cable or adapter path; check that the connection is present and seated.

Also establish how the drive is routed and which slots are enabled for its interface. Routing requirements can vary by platform and configuration. For instance, Lenovo’s SR650 V3 storage documentation says U.3 NVMe drives in Tri-mode require U.3 x1 enabled for the selected slots; the default backplane setting is U.2 x4. That is an example of a mode dependency, not a procedure confirmed for HR630X or HR650X.

Check the controller only if it matches Lenovo’s advisory

Lenovo’s RAID 540-8i advisory, published July 21, 2025 and last modified August 6, 2025, covers NVMe drives not detected or configurable through the ThinkSystem RAID 540-8i PCIe Gen4 12Gb Adapter in the systems listed there. It says the adapter’s default profile supports SATA and SAS only; the NVMe-capable profile is ID 41, “NVMe/SATA/SAS.” A reboot may be needed after changing the profile.

This is a configuration-specific lead, not a confirmed HR630X/HR650X fix. First read the controller model and firmware and verify that both the adapter and server configuration fall within Lenovo’s advisory. Do not apply a RAID 540-8i profile instruction to a different controller. If the hardware matches, follow Lenovo’s advisory to check and change the profile with storCLI, then reboot if required.

Use the results to choose the next diagnostic step

  1. Record the identifiers: capture the server machine type, SSD label and part number, form factor, capacity, and bay or slot.
  2. Map detection: check firmware, XCC, LXPM, the operating system, and the RAID utility, recording where the drive first disappears.
  3. Inspect the path: confirm the backplane supports NVMe and that the required PCIe cable or adapter path is installed and seated.
  4. Identify the controller: record its model and firmware. Check the RAID 540-8i profile only if the hardware and covered configuration match Lenovo’s advisory.
  5. Confirm qualification: compare the exact PM9A3 part number with Lenovo support information for the exact HR machine type. Lenovo’s PM9A3 guide does not establish HR630X/HR650X support in its available tables.
  6. Isolate a remaining fault: if the drive is still absent at hardware inventory, use a known-supported drive or a known-good compatible slot and path only after confirming the precise configuration. This can help distinguish a drive fault from a slot or path issue; it is a diagnostic approach, not a Lenovo-prescribed test for this exact combination.

What can be concluded

The information available does not establish PM9A3 compatibility with the reader’s exact HR630X/HR650X configuration, or identify the drive as the cause of the detection failure. Lenovo’s RAID 540-8i guidance is relevant only when the controller and covered configuration match; Lenovo’s HR630X/HR650X documentation page does not itself settle PM9A3 support. Establish the exact machine type, drive part number, NVMe path, controller, and detection layer before labeling the SSD supported, unsupported, or defective.
