Compare the exact sets—not just the brand names. Before buying LEGO or another building-block product, check its scale and fit with bricks you already own, how firmly pieces connect and separate, whether the assortment suits your build, the age and safety information, instructions, and current price. Similar-looking bricks are not automatically compatible, and the available evidence does not establish a universal quality winner.
Start with the build you want to make
A set is a good match when its parts, connection behavior, and instructions suit the intended use. A child building freely, a builder extending an existing collection, and someone following a specific model plan may value different things. Compare candidate sets against the same use case rather than relying on a brand-wide label or piece count.
- Extending an existing collection: prioritize confirmed fit with the bricks already on hand.
- Building a planned model: check whether the assortment contains the required shapes, sizes, colors, and specialized pieces.
- Open-ended play: consider whether the set provides a useful mix of parts and whether its pieces can be rebuilt and separated comfortably.
- Buying for a child: check the exact product’s age guidance and safety information before comparing other features.
Will bricks from different brands fit together?
Do not assume compatibility from appearance alone. LEGO describes its standard brick connection as studs on top fitting between tubes and the surrounding walls of another brick; the resulting hold is called “clutch power.” The LEGO Group explains this mechanism on its How do LEGO bricks work? page. A different product may use a similar-looking format without guaranteeing that its parts connect or sit flush with LEGO bricks.

LEGO and DUPLO are a separate, conditional case. LEGO says DUPLO pieces fit best with larger LEGO bricks and identifies some even-stud-count examples that fit, while certain odd-stud-count examples do not. Check LEGO’s LEGO and DUPLO guidance rather than treating the two systems as universally interchangeable.
If you can inspect the bricks before committing to a large build, try a small, noncritical connection. Check that parts engage, sit as expected, remain connected during ordinary handling, and can be separated without undue effort. A single successful connection is useful for that particular combination, not proof that every part in either range will fit.

Compare connection feel, not just whether pieces connect
A build may need to hold together while it is handled and still come apart readily for rebuilding. LEGO calls the strength of the connection between elements “clutch power.” Its Quality and Safety publication, displayed with a 2018 date, says LEGO tests durability qualities including clutch power, measured by the force needed to separate two elements.
That explains LEGO’s stated approach; it does not provide a comparable result for other brands. The available material does not establish a controlled, independent ranking of LEGO and all other standard-size brands for fit, durability, or consistency. Treat a firm connection or easy separation as a product-level consideration, not a reason to claim that one brand always performs better.

Check whether the assortment suits your project
Piece count alone does not tell you how useful a set will be. A larger total can still leave out the shapes, sizes, colors, or specialized elements your planned model needs. Compare the listed parts and images for the exact products, especially if you are filling a gap in a collection or following a particular design.
The Mattel page for the MEGA BLOKS example identifies it as a 60-piece assorted-brick set. That figure describes that product listing; it does not show how its assortment compares with a LEGO set or establish which one offers more useful parts for your needs.

Read age guidance and safety information on the exact product
Use the age label and safety information for the set under consideration; do not substitute a general impression of brand quality. LEGO says most of its pieces have been made from ABS since 1963 and that its toys are tested by independent laboratories and meet or exceed toy safety laws wherever sold. Those are the LEGO Group’s statements about its own products, not a comparative safety ranking. Its materials and safety page gives the company’s explanation.

Consider instructions and play style
Some buyers want a guided build; others want open-ended pieces or parts that can join an existing collection. Inspect the exact listing to see what instructions are included and whether the set is presented as a particular model or an assortment for free building. No controlled comparison of instruction quality is established, so judge the specific product against the kind of building experience the recipient wants.
Compare price against useful value
Check current prices for sets serving the same purpose, then account for the parts you are likely to use, the quantity and type of pieces, and how well the set integrates with an existing collection. Cost per piece can be a rough screening measure, but it treats a small common element and a large or specialized part as equivalent. There is no date-stamped, like-for-like price comparison here, so the evidence does not support naming a universal value winner.
