Choose Rivendell (10316) for a broad Middle-earth display centered on the Council of Elrond and a larger Fellowship-era minifigure lineup. Choose Barad-dûr (10333) for a far taller Mordor fortress with Sauron, an illuminated Eye, and an opening gate. The practical tiebreakers are your display space, the characters and scene you prefer, and the current price in your market.

Which set fits your display space?
Rivendell is the wider, deeper model: approximately 72 cm across and 50 cm deep, compared with Barad-dûr’s 45 cm width and 30 cm depth. Barad-dûr is the taller build at approximately 83 cm, versus Rivendell’s 39 cm. Measure the intended shelf or display area in all three directions; leave additional room beyond the model dimensions for access and the way you plan to set it up.

Rivendell’s three sections can be displayed separately, giving you more flexibility if you do not want to show the entire landscape as one arrangement. Barad-dûr’s four modular sections contain interior rooms, but its defining feature is a tower that needs substantially more vertical clearance.

Choose Rivendell for the Fellowship and the Council
Rivendell recreates an Elven valley and the Council of Elrond, with a river, bridge, gazebo, and tower. Its 15 minifigures include Fellowship characters such as Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Gandalf, Frodo, and Sam, as well as Bilbo. It is the more natural choice if you want a scene associated with the Fellowship’s gathering and Rivendell’s peaceful setting.
Choose Barad-dûr for Mordor and Sauron
Barad-dûr centers on Sauron’s fortress and includes Sauron, the Mouth of Sauron, an Orc, and Gothmog, alongside Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. Its 10 minifigures make the lineup smaller than Rivendell’s, but it focuses more directly on Mordor and its characters.

Which set has more to interact with?
Barad-dûr has the standout theatrical features: an opening black gate and a light-brick Eye of Sauron, as well as a Palantír and detailed rooms. Its four modular sections include a weapons forge, throne room, and prison. Rivendell’s features are more scene-focused: the Council setting, Elven forge, Elrond’s study, and the Shards of Narsil. The difference is less about one set having more detail overall and more about whether you prefer fortress rooms and dramatic mechanisms or a landscape built around a recognizable story scene.

Which one should you buy?
- Pick Rivendell if you want the Council of Elrond, a landscape-style display, three separately displayable sections, and the larger 15-minifigure lineup.
- Pick Barad-dûr if you want Sauron’s fortress, the Mordor characters, the illuminated Eye and opening gate, or a display that is taller than it is wide.
- Let your space decide if both appeal: a shelf with limited height favors Rivendell, while one with limited depth may suit Barad-dûr more readily. Check the full assembled dimensions and allow clearance beyond them.
- Let the live local price decide if neither theme clearly wins. The captured US Rivendell price is not a direct price comparison with Barad-dûr.
