There is now an official LEGO PlayStation set: set 72306, based on the original console and controller. It is distinct from fan-made PlayStation-inspired builds, which vary by creator and are not official LEGO products unless LEGO has approved and released them. The key choice is whether you want a documented, licensed display set with known specifications or a particular custom design whose instructions and parts you will need to assess individually.
What is the official LEGO PlayStation set?
LEGO announced set 72306 on September 3, 2026, with LEGO Insiders early access beginning October 1 and general availability announced for October 4. LEGO describes it as its first-ever PlayStation set. The 18+ model has 1,911 pieces and measures about 26 cm (10.5 inches) wide. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent assessment of build difficulty or display quality. LEGO’s announcement and its product listing provide the official details.
What the box builds
The model recreates the original PlayStation console and its first controller at near 1:1 scale. It is primarily a display build, but it has working Open and Power buttons, and the controller plugs into the console. Removable buildable scenes reference Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, originally released in 1997 and 1999, respectively. LEGO’s product description gives the set these interactive details beyond the console shell. PlayStation’s announcement also describes the collaboration; Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Steffi Steffen, Senior Director, Licensed Merchandise, said, “To bring this set to life, we collaborated closely with LEGO designers to craft a building experience that is inspired by PlayStation’s origins.”

How does set 72306 compare with a fan-made build?
“PlayStation-inspired” describes a subject or design influence, not official status. A fan-made MOC (short for “my own creation”) may be a finished design, instructions, or a parts package; those are different offers. The details below apply to set 72306. For a custom model, verify its creator’s documentation rather than assuming it shares the official set’s features or specifications.
| What to compare | Official LEGO PlayStation 72306 | Fan-inspired build |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Official LEGO product, identified by set number 72306. | Depends on the individual design. Confirm the creator and whether LEGO has actually approved and released it. |
| Subject and contents | Original PlayStation console and controller, with removable Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes. | Varies. Check the specific model’s description and images. |
| Specifications | 1,911 pieces, age guidance 18+, approximately 26 cm (10.5 inches) wide, according to LEGO. | Piece count, dimensions, age suitability, and build time are not established for fan builds generally; check the particular designer’s documentation. |
| Features | Functional Open and Power buttons, a plug-in controller, and removable display scenes. | Features depend on the design and should be substantiated by its creator. |
| Cost and what you receive | LEGO’s announced regional suggested prices are listed above. Check current seller terms and stock. | Check whether instructions are free or paid, whether parts are included, and the cost and availability of sourcing them. |
Which option suits you?
Choose the official set if you want a known product
Set 72306 is the clearer choice if you want an official LEGO release with a stated piece count, adult age guidance, approximate size, and documented interactive elements. Its original-console subject and game scenes also make it a focused display choice for someone interested in early PlayStation history.

Consider a fan design if its specific features matter more
A custom model may appeal if you find a particular design that better matches the console, controller, or presentation you want. There is no meaningful general claim that fan builds are cheaper, more accurate, easier, or more customizable: those depend on the design, parts source, and instructions. Before committing, review the creator’s page and establish exactly what is being sold or shared.

LEGO Ideas is one route for fan-originated product ideas, not a label for every fan build. LEGO says an idea that reaches 10,000 supporters enters review and may be considered for production; reaching that threshold does not guarantee a set. LEGO also says review can take several months.
