Matthew Johnson was sentenced to 28 months in prison in December 2025 after making false home-insurance claims involving purportedly stolen LEGO sets and other valuable goods. The case is one example of detected insurance fraud; figures reported by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show that insurers identified £1.34 billion in fraudulent claims during 2025, even as the number of detected claims fell.
Who was the LEGO insurance fraudster?
Matthew Johnson, 42, of Misterton, Nottinghamshire, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 17 December 2025 for fraud by false representation. The City of London Police says he received a 28-month prison sentence, and the court set a timetable for confiscation proceedings requiring him to repay the proceeds. City of London Police
What did the false claims involve?
Between May 2021 and January 2022, Johnson made false claims to AXA Insurance about alleged burglaries at properties in Shetland and Goole, East Yorkshire. The claimed items included MacBooks, televisions, gaming consoles, fishing equipment and large quantities of collectible LEGO sets. Across four claims, he received more than £14,000, according to police.
How were the claims exposed?
Repeated receipts and questionable invoices
AXA became concerned after finding the same receipts in different claims and invoices that appeared to have been altered to match the insured address. Police say manufacturers and retailers confirmed that the documents were fraudulent: some invoices had been falsified, while others related to products that had not been sold by the time of the alleged thefts. A claim using another identity
Police say a further claim was submitted under the name Gavin Beadle and listed a different Goole address. The related banking details led back to Johnson. The Passport Office and DVLA confirmed that identity documents supporting the claim were fraudulent.

What do the reported UK insurance-fraud figures show?
The Guardian reported figures attributed to the ABI for 2025. They cover fraudulent claims insurers detected, not every fraudulent claim that may have occurred. The value of detected claims rose from 2024, while the number of detected claims declined.

Why the case matters
Johnson’s claims were not limited to LEGO: they included several kinds of valuable goods, and police say the investigation turned on patterns across claims, document checks and evidence recovered at his home. Detective Constable Richard Fox of the City of London Police Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department said: “This case highlights the meticulous work our officers carry out to expose and dismantle complex insurance fraud. Johnson created a web of false identities, forged documents, and fabricated claims to exploit the system for personal gain.”
