Choose LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight if you want Bruce Wayne’s journey to becoming Batman, an open-world Gotham adventure, and the combat system described for the newer game. Choose LEGO DC Super-Villains if you would rather create your own villain and lead a story centered on the Legion of Doom. Neither is a universal winner; the right pick depends on whose perspective and premise appeal to you.

How the games differ

What matters LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight LEGO DC Super-Villains
Player perspective Follow Bruce Wayne on his path to becoming Batman. DC’s official game page frames it around Batman’s story and history. Create a villain of your own and play as the group’s new recruit. DC’s official game page describes the player-created villain joining the misfits.
Story and setting A story-led action-adventure in an open-world Gotham, drawing on Batman across media. The official launch announcement also describes the Batcave and Batman’s allies. Warner Bros. Games’ launch announcement The Legion of Doom takes center stage after the Justice League disappears and the Justice Syndicate arrives. The story visits Gotham, Metropolis, and Smallville. DC’s official game page
Gameplay emphasis in official descriptions Warner Bros. Games describes a Batman combat system with attack chains, counters, takedowns, and gadgets. Warner Bros. Games’ gameplay announcement The official page emphasizes the custom villain and story premise; it does not establish a directly comparable combat system. DC’s official game page
Release timing The standard edition launched worldwide May 22, 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has a separate release date: September 18, 2026. Standard-edition launch announcement · Switch 2 announcement DC lists October 16, 2018, as its on-sale date. DC’s official game page

Choose Legacy of the Dark Knight if you want to play as Batman

  • You want Bruce Wayne’s development into Batman to be the story’s core.
  • You prefer Gotham as the main setting and want an open-world action-adventure.
  • The newer combat focus—attack chains, counters, takedowns, and gadgets—sounds more appealing than a story led by a player-created villain.
  • You want to play solo or locally with one other player. Warner Bros. Games describes solo play and two-player local co-op; its support FAQ provides the co-op details. WB Games Support FAQ

Choose DC Super-Villains if you want to make your own character

  • Character creation is a priority, and you would rather shape a villain than follow Bruce Wayne’s origin.
  • You like the idea of playing alongside the Legion of Doom as it confronts the Justice Syndicate.
  • A story that moves among Gotham, Metropolis, and Smallville appeals more than an adventure focused on Gotham.

DC lists LEGO DC Super-Villains for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. That list describes the platforms on DC’s game page; check your platform’s current store listing for the version and edition available to you. DC’s platform list

Check platform and local-play details before buying

For Legacy, DC’s game page and Warner Bros. Games announcements provide platform information, including the Nintendo Switch 2 version and its September 18, 2026, release. Platform releases can have different timing, so verify the exact console or PC store listing and edition rather than assuming every version launched together. Legacy’s official descriptions confirm solo play and two-player local co-op. The DC page used for Super-Villains does not specify co-op, so it is not enough to establish whether a particular version supports the kind of local play you want. Check that version’s documentation or store listing before deciding based on co-op. WB Games Support FAQ

What official information does not settle

The official descriptions establish different premises and features, but they do not provide a like-for-like basis for declaring one game longer, more replayable, or better reviewed. Nor do they establish a quantitative winner. Treat the choice as a preference between Batman’s story and Gotham-focused adventure, on one hand, and a customizable villain’s DC-wide story, on the other—not as a measured ranking.
