LEGO and PlayStation’s “PLAY LIKE IT’S 1994” campaign is a nostalgia-led film for a LEGO replica of the original PlayStation—not a new, playable console. It turns the console’s startup sound, four familiar button symbols and 1990s-inspired activities into a product reveal, then highlights details built into the 1,911-piece set.
What happens in the “PLAY LIKE IT’S 1994” film?
As LBB’s campaign coverage describes it, the film opens with the orchestral swell of the PlayStation startup audio, followed by a high-pitched beep and a rhythmic beat. A group of friends gather the Triangle, Circle, X and Square components through a run of energetic scenes inspired by the decade.
The action moves through dancing, rave-inspired settings, screen printing, skateboarding and DJ-ing. The fragments come together as a brick-built PlayStation, while the film also shows a Gran Turismo mini track and an Ape Escape diorama. LBB characterizes the result as both a product demonstration and a celebration of the original console, shot with a handheld-video-camera look.

Why does the campaign lean on 1990s nostalgia?
The film ties the new display model to recognizable PlayStation cues rather than presenting it as a gaming device: the startup audio, the four button symbols, and scenes built around period-associated activities. Its tactile close-ups—especially the working buttons and the controller plugging into the console—connect that nostalgia to specific features of the physical set.
The campaign article and official product announcement do not report performance statistics or include attributable remarks from named speakers. The available coverage establishes the creative concept, product specifications and launch details, but not audience response or campaign results.
