Those labels describe specific devices, not a universal light setting or a promise of results. Check your mask’s instructions for its exact mode, schedule and safety directions.
What each LED face mask setting is for
In the FDA device records cited here, the labeled uses differ by light mode. A color alone does not tell you the wavelength, dose, or treatment schedule: those details depend on the exact model.

What the modes may—and may not—do
Blue and red light for acne
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says visible blue, red and blue-plus-red light devices can treat pimples. They are not effective against blackheads, whiteheads, acne cysts or nodules, and results vary. Light treatment alone rarely clears acne; a dermatologist may include it in a broader treatment plan. Red light and wrinkles
A device’s wrinkle indication is not a guarantee that it will produce a particular result for you. The AAD says it is difficult to determine how effective at-home red light therapy is for aging concerns because studies assess different devices, treatment periods and questions. Treat claims such as “erases wrinkles” or guaranteed acne clearance skeptically unless evidence supports the claim for that exact model. AAD: Is red light therapy right for your skin?
How to choose a mode and schedule
- Identify the exact mask model. Check its label or manual; do not assume another mask’s colors or specifications apply.
- Match the setting to its stated use. Use a mode only for the indication the manufacturer lists for that model.
- Follow that model’s schedule. Use its specified session length and frequency. At-home devices differ; the AAD notes that some acne devices may require twice-daily use, but that frequency must not be applied to other masks.
- Follow fit and care instructions. Use the specified positioning and cleaning steps, and wear eye protection if the manufacturer’s directions require it.
Clearance is not a guarantee of effectiveness
“FDA-cleared” and “will work for me” are different claims. The AAD explains that FDA clearance indicates low risk to the public, but does not tell consumers how effective a device will be. In the TheraFace Mask’s June 9, 2023 decision letter, the FDA said it had determined the device was “substantially equivalent” to legally marketed predicate devices for the indications stated in the enclosure. That is a device-specific regulatory determination, not a promise of an individual result. The 510(k) summary also lists 648 LEDs, a product specification rather than an efficacy measure. Safety considerations before using a mask
- Ask a dermatologist before use if you have a condition that makes you light-sensitive, take medication that can increase light sensitivity, or have darker skin. The AAD notes visible light may be more likely to cause hyperpigmentation in darker skin.
- Follow the manufacturer’s directions, including any eye-protection requirements.
- Stop using the device and seek medical advice if you have a concerning reaction. An LED mask is not a substitute for diagnosis or established acne care.
