A pre-launch leak reported that AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT averaged 38% faster than the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p and 42% faster at 4K. Those were AMD-attributed averages across more than 30 games, combining rasterized and ray-traced workloads—not a promise of that lead in every game. Independent post-launch testing found a smaller advantage in a mostly rasterized 1440p suite.

What did the RX 9070 XT leak claim?

On February 23, 2025, VideoCardz reported leaked figures it described as AMD’s official numbers from a press briefing. Across an average of more than 30 games at Ultra settings, the RX 9070 XT was said to lead the RX 7900 GRE by 38% at 2560×1440 and 42% at 3840×2160. The combined average included both rasterization and ray tracing (RT) games, so the result depends on the workload mix; it does not mean the XT is 42% faster in every 4K game. VideoCardz’s leak report did not give full settings for every title in the chart.

TechSpot’s February 26 report on those leaked charts said the claimed raster advantage ranged from 23% to 46%, with an RT advantage of up to 68%. These were still AMD-attributed pre-launch figures reported secondhand, not results from TechSpot’s own independent testing. The same coverage described the leaked tests as using Ultra or maximum settings without upscaling or frame generation. TechSpot’s contemporaneous report provides that additional description.

How did independent testing compare?

After launch, TechSpot tested 18 games and measured the RX 9070 XT at 20% faster than the RX 7900 GRE in its 1440p mostly rasterized workload summary. Its article contrasted that result with AMD’s 35% raster claim. That comparison is useful context, not a definitive correction: AMD’s leaked overall average included RT games, while the cited TechSpot result reflects a different game selection, benchmark scenes, and lab method. TechSpot’s independent review reports its test results and discusses the differences.

The numbers answer different questions. An average from one selection of games cannot predict performance in a particular title, and a mixed raster-and-RT average should not be treated as a raster-only result. For a comparison relevant to your own games, look for results at your resolution and settings, and check whether RT, upscaling, or frame generation is enabled.

What did AMD later confirm about the RX 9070 XT?

AMD’s February 28, 2025 launch release listed the RX 9070 XT with 64 compute units, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, a 2.4 GHz game clock, boost up to 3.0 GHz, a 256-bit memory interface, 64 MB of Infinity Cache, and 304 W total board power. AMD said board-partner availability was expected to begin March 6, 2025. The release gave a U.S. suggested launch price of $599 for the RX 9070 XT and $549 for the RX 9070; those are historical launch figures, not current prices or evidence of present availability. AMD’s launch announcement contains the product and launch details.

AMD’s own performance-test setup

AMD’s launch release also published its own 4K comparisons. AMD said it ran those tests in its performance labs in February 2025 on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D system with 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory, Windows 11 Pro, and Radeon driver 25.3.1 RC 31. The RX 7900 GRE system was described as similarly configured and used the same driver. AMD listed a selection of games and graphics presets in its footnote and cautioned that system manufacturers may use different configurations and obtain different results. These are manufacturer tests, not independent lab measurements.

How do the cards’ specifications and power needs compare?

Compute units 64 80
Stream processors 4,096 5,120
Memory 16 GB GDDR6 16 GB GDDR6
Memory interface 256-bit 256-bit

Typical/total board power 304 W typical board power in AMD’s current product specifications 260 W typical board power in AMD’s current product specifications
Minimum recommended PSU 750 W, according to AMD’s current product specifications Not stated on AMD’s product page

Specification figures come from AMD’s current RX 9070 XT product page and RX 7900 GRE product page. The RX 9070 XT uses more listed board power, while both cards have 16 GB of memory and a 256-bit interface. Compute-unit and stream-processor counts from different architectures do not establish gaming performance by themselves.

AMD’s 750 W recommendation is a minimum PSU recommendation for the RX 9070 XT, not an instruction to replace every existing power supply. Check the requirements of the exact board-partner card and your full system before deciding whether a PSU change is needed.

What should you take away from the comparison?

  • The headline figures—38% at 1440p and 42% at 4K—were leaked AMD-attributed averages over 30-plus games, not universal results.
  • The overall leak average mixed raster and RT workloads, and the lead can vary substantially with the games and rendering settings included.
  • TechSpot’s independent, mostly rasterized 1440p suite measured a 20% RX 9070 XT lead over the RX 7900 GRE; that result applies to its tested workload, not every game or benchmark suite.
  • AMD’s later launch material published specifications and manufacturer test details, but it does not turn the earlier leaked averages into independent measurements.
