League of Legends Worlds 2026 has three stages: a four-team, double-elimination Play-In sends one team into a 16-team Swiss Stage; Swiss teams qualify with three wins or are eliminated with three losses; and the eight survivors play a best-of-five, single-elimination Knockout Stage. The first Swiss round uses draw tiers, while later rounds pair teams with the same record without rematches.
How the Worlds 2026 format works at a glance
Riot Games says 19 teams qualify for Worlds 2026. Four begin in the Play-In, whose winner completes the 16-team Swiss field. Eight Swiss teams advance to Knockouts.

Riot’s Worlds 2026 Primer describes Swiss as a five-round competition, but that does not mean every team necessarily plays five matches: a team exits as soon as it reaches three wins or three losses.

Play-In: four teams compete for one Swiss spot
The 2026 Play-In is a four-team, best-of-five double-elimination bracket. A team is not out after its first series loss; the bracket gives it another route to the Swiss place. This differs from Riot’s 2025 handbook, which describes a single-elimination best-of-five Play-In.

Riot lists the 2026 Play-In teams as a CBLOL team, Karmine Corp, Cloud9, and MVK. The opening matchups are set by a fully random draw after the CBLOL Finals on October 10. The Play-In is scheduled for October 15–18 at Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles.
Swiss Stage: qualify at three wins, exit at three losses
The Swiss Stage has 16 teams and a maximum of five rounds. A team advances to Knockouts as soon as it records three match wins; a team is eliminated when it records three losses. Riot identifies both best-of-one and best-of-three matches in this stage.
Round 1 uses four draw tiers
Riot’s initial Swiss draw is scheduled after the Play-In on October 18. The four draw tiers determine the Round 1 pairing pattern: Tier 1 faces Tier 4, and Tier 2 faces Tier 3. Same-region pairings are not allowed in this opening round.

The primer leaves the two CBLOL seeds unnamed: it lists the first CBLOL seed in Tier 2, while the other CBLOL team is not identified by name in the tier list.
Rounds 2–5 pair teams by record
After Round 1, teams are randomly paired against other teams with the same win-loss record. Opponents cannot be repeated. Same-region matchups are permitted from Round 2 onward, so regional separation is an opening-round restriction rather than a rule for the whole Swiss Stage.
Knockouts: eight teams, single elimination
The eight Swiss qualifiers enter a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket. Every series loss ends a team’s tournament.

For the quarterfinal draw, Riot says the two teams that finish Swiss 3–0 are randomly paired against two of the four teams that finish 3–2. The remaining four teams are randomly drawn into the other two quarterfinals. The quarterfinals lead to semifinals and then the final.
What seeding means at Worlds 2026
For the Swiss opening round, Riot calls the categories “draw tiers.” They determine which tier faces which in Round 1, alongside the rule against same-region pairings. They are not presented as a complete ranking that dictates every later matchup: from Round 2, pairings are based on current records and the no-rematch rule.
Riot separately says regional performance, including MSI results, informs overall Worlds 2026 regional seeding. The Play-In and Swiss draws are distinct: the Play-In uses a fully random draw, while Swiss Round 1 follows the tier structure and regional restriction.

How 19 teams qualify
Riot’s 2026 allocation includes three teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL; two from CBLOL; the MSI champion; and an additional team from the region that finishes second at MSI. The MSI champion must still qualify through its home-region playoffs to retain the invite. Together, those routes account for 19 qualifying teams, with four entering the Play-In and the rest placed into the Swiss field.

What changed from Worlds 2025?
Riot says Worlds 2026 largely mirrors Worlds 2025, with changes limited to the Play-In format and regional seeding. The documented Play-In change is specific: the 2025 handbook describes a single-elimination best-of-five, while Worlds 2026 uses a four-team double-elimination best-of-five.
