No—LoL rank boosting is not safe under Riot’s rules. Riot treats another person playing Ranked on your account, or certain duo-queue arrangements intended to inflate your MMR, as ranked manipulation. Its published penalties include escalating bans and removal of boosting-related gains and rewards. A low placement by itself is different: Riot says to play placements honestly and contact Player Support if the result seems significantly too low.
What counts as boosting in League of Legends?
Riot defines boosting as someone playing Ranked on an account that is not theirs to increase that account’s MMR. Its definition also covers a booster duo-queueing with someone on a smurf account to raise the other player’s MMR. Riot calls being carried to a higher division by queuing with another account, typically a booster, “hitchhiking”; its 2025 developer update also calls this “bussing.” Riot groups these behaviors under ranked manipulation. Riot’s Ranked FAQ and its 2025 ranked update describe these rules.
The key issue is the conduct and its effect on MMR, not simply whether one player is more skilled than another. Riot’s FAQ also identifies intentional deranking in Flex queue and using a deliberately deranked account to help another account climb as ranked manipulation.

- Someone else logs in and plays Ranked on your account: Riot defines this as boosting.
- You duo with a booster or smurf to inflate your account’s MMR: Riot includes this in its boosting definition.
- You use a second account you created and leveled yourself: Riot permits alternate accounts when you use them yourself, play placements honestly, do not share them, and do not manipulate ranked play.
- You try your best in placements but land lower than expected: Riot distinguishes an honest result from deliberately trying to place below your real skill.
Can you get banned for boosting in League?
Yes. Riot’s FAQ lists the following schedule for both the boosted account and the player doing the boosting:

| Offense | Riot’s listed ban |
|---|---|
| First | 3 days |
| Second | 14 days |
| Third | Permanent |
Riot also lists Honor reduction, exclusion from current-season Ranked rewards (or revocation if rewards have already been granted), and reversal of LP and MMR gains attributed to boosting. It says penalties may be linked across accounts it is confident belong to the same player. These are Riot’s published consequences, not a prediction of what will happen in an individual case; Riot’s assessment and account history matter. See Riot’s Ranked FAQ for its account of the policy.
Can someone else play Ranked on your account?
No. Riot says account sharing or selling violates its Terms of Service, and defines sharing to include giving or selling an account to another person or using an account made by someone else. When Riot can correlate sharing with boosting or ranked manipulation, it says the account may be suspended and boosting benefits and associated Ranked rewards may be removed.

Riot says it considers multiple signals when assessing account sharing; a shared IP address alone is not enough. Its FAQ does not disclose the full detection logic or numerical thresholds. Riot says it looks at account MMR rather than visible rank alone, and that major, unusual MMR changes over a short period can indicate boosting or ranked manipulation. Riot developer Phroxzon described the assessment this way in an October 6, 2025 FAQ: “Our system actually doesn’t take visual ranks into account at all and purely looks at the MMR of the account.” Riot’s FAQ gives the policy details.

A higher-ranked friend simply being better does not, on its own, establish boosting. But Riot specifically says a Challenger player duo-queueing with someone on an alt to boost them is not allowed in Ranked. The issue is using another account and the arrangement to carry or inflate a player’s MMR—not the friendship itself. Riot says you can play normal Summoner’s Rift or other game modes together instead. Riot’s Ranked FAQ explains this example.

Are alternate accounts or low placements against the rules?
Riot says you may have multiple accounts when you create and level them yourself, use them yourself, do your best in placements, do not share them, and avoid ranked manipulation. Its 2025 update similarly says a self-made alternate account is safe when its creator does not deliberately derank it. A second account is not automatically a violation; sharing, intentional deranking, or manipulating Ranked play is the distinction.
A low placement alone is not proof of smurfing or boosting. Riot’s FAQ gives the example of a high-MMR player who genuinely tries their best in placements and lands in Gold; Riot says that outcome alone does not make the player a smurf. If you believe you were placed significantly too low, Riot advises contacting Player Support. It does not promise a correction or specify a response time. Riot’s Ranked FAQ addresses honest placements.

Rank expectations can also shift as Riot adjusts rank and MMR distribution. In a March 2026 update, Riot described changes at both ends of the ladder, including moving some experienced players from Iron into Bronze and some higher-end Diamond players into Master. That context does not establish what rank any particular player should receive. Riot’s March 2026 ranked update explains the adjustments.

What to do if your placements seem too low
- Play your placements yourself. Do your best in each match rather than intentionally losing or trying to land below your skill level.
- Keep your account private. Do not give another person access to play Ranked or use an account created by someone else.
- Avoid MMR manipulation. Do not use a booster, a smurf arrangement, or deliberate deranking to alter your rank.
- Contact Riot Player Support if you believe your honest placement is significantly too low. Riot does not guarantee a placement change or provide a response-time estimate in the cited FAQ.
