In 2026, LCS teams have three split-based routes to international play: the Split 1 playoff winner qualifies for First Stand, the top two Split 2 teams qualify for MSI, and the top three Split 3 playoff finishers qualify for Worlds. MSI results can also affect Worlds invitations and regional seeding. These rules are specific to the 2026 season; Riot says regional formats vary and can change from year to year.
How the LCS qualifies for international events in 2026
| LCS split | Regional format | International qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Split 1 | Best-of-three single round robin; top six reach a modified double-elimination playoff | The playoff winner qualifies for First Stand. |
| Split 2 | Not stated in Riot’s season overview | The top two LCS teams qualify for MSI. |
| Split 3 | Best-of-three single round robin; top six reach a modified double-elimination playoff with a gauntlet-style losers bracket | The top three playoff finishers qualify for Worlds. |
The Split 1 and Split 3 formats and their qualification rules come from Riot’s 2026 LCS Split 1 handbook and 2026 LCS Split 3 handbook. Riot’s 2026 season overview says the top two teams from regions other than CBLOL qualify for MSI, which includes the LCS. It does not establish the LCS Split 2 match or playoff format.
How the 2026 international events work
First Stand: Split 1’s international event
Each region’s Split 1 winner qualifies for First Stand. The LCK and LPL also send their second-place teams. Riot’s handbook describes a group phase with two groups of four using double-elimination brackets, followed by a single-elimination best-of-five phase. The winning region earns a bye directly into the MSI bracket stage.
MSI: the Split 2 route and a Worlds consequence
The 2026 MSI field has 11 teams: two each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL, plus one from CBLOL. Riot’s March 22, 2026 MSI and Worlds update describes a four-team double-elimination Play-In, with one team advancing to join seven teams already starting in the bracket stage. Those seven include each region’s first seed and the second seed of the highest-ranked region among the regions sending two teams from First Stand.

MSI affects Worlds beyond the standard regional split route: its champion qualifies directly for Worlds, and the region finishing second receives a fourth Worlds seed for its domestic league. The direct invitation has a condition: the MSI champion must also qualify for its home region’s playoffs to retain it. Riot’s MSI standings and overview describes the broader MSI qualification and Worlds consequences; for the 2026 Play-In advancement count, the dated March update is the more specific source.
Worlds: regional qualifiers plus MSI-earned places
Riot’s March 2026 update describes a 19-team Worlds field: three teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL; two from CBLOL; the MSI champion; and an additional team from the region that finishes second at MSI. This means the LCS’s three Split 3 qualifiers are part of its regional allocation, while MSI can add places under the stated rules.

The 2026 Worlds Play-In is scheduled as a four-team double-elimination best-of-five bracket, with one team advancing to Swiss. As announced on October 7, 2026, the event is scheduled for October 15–November 14: Play-In in Los Angeles from October 15–18; Swiss in Allen, Texas, from October 23–31; quarterfinals and semifinals in Allen from November 3–8; and the Grand Final in Brooklyn on November 14. These are announced upcoming dates and venues, not completed event results.
How to read the qualification picture
- Keep the split routes separate. The First Stand berth is earned through Split 1, MSI berths through Split 2, and the LCS’s three standard Worlds berths through Split 3.
- Do not assume one region’s format applies to another. Riot explicitly says regions run their own split formats and styles; the LCS brackets above are not a template for every league.
- Account for MSI when considering Worlds access. A region’s MSI result can bring a direct invitation for the champion and an additional regional seed for the runner-up’s league, subject to the champion’s domestic playoff condition.
Riot’s 2026 season handbook presents the season as three regional splits with First Stand, MSI, and Worlds following in turn. Because format and allocation rules are season-specific, use the current handbook and tournament update for the relevant season rather than carrying these 2026 rules forward automatically.
