LCD panel types describe how a monitor’s liquid crystals are arranged and controlled. The three common types are TN, VA, and IPS: TN is often associated with speed, VA with stronger contrast, and IPS with more consistent viewing from the side. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees about a particular monitor.
What is an LCD panel?
An LCD, or liquid-crystal display, forms an image by controlling how much light passes through its pixels. The liquid crystals shape the image; they do not produce the light themselves. An LCD therefore needs a separate light source, called a backlight.
In monitor listings, “panel type” usually refers to the liquid-crystal arrangement. The common families are twisted nematic (TN), vertical alignment (VA), and in-plane switching (IPS). Their arrangements and switching approaches lead to different performance trade-offs.
What are TN, VA, and IPS panels?
| Panel type | Common tendency | When it may matter | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| TN | Often associated with fast response | Motion response and competitive gaming | Check the specific monitor’s response and viewing behavior; viewing angles are commonly a trade-off. |
| VA | Often associated with higher contrast | Dark-scene depth and contrast | Response behavior and black performance vary by panel and monitor. |
| IPS | Often associated with wider, more consistent viewing angles | Off-axis consistency and shared viewing | Contrast and response vary by panel and monitor. |
These descriptions are useful starting points, not universal rankings. Product design, tuning, panel generation, and measurement conditions affect the result, so a TN, VA, or IPS label alone does not establish a monitor’s actual response, contrast, brightness, color, or overall quality. LG’s monitor panel guide and Xiaomi’s screen-material comparison describe these broad tendencies; neither should be treated as a specification for every model.
#1 Best Overall
- VIVID COLORS: Experience stunning colors across the entire display with the IPS panel. Colors remain bright and clear across the screen, even when you change angles. Tones and shades are represented consistently and beautifully with less color washing.
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects. The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments.¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain a competitive edge with optimizable game settings. Color and image contrast can be instantly adjusted to see scenes more clearly, while Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view.
- EASY ON THE EYES: Protect your vision and stay comfortable, even during long sessions. Stay focused on your work with reduced blue light and screen flicker.²
- A MODERN AESTHETIC: Featuring a super-slim design with ultra-thin border bezels, this monitor enhances any setup with a sleek, modern look. Enjoy a lightweight and stylish addition to any environment.
Is an LED monitor a different LCD panel type?
Usually, no. In monitor listings, “LED” commonly refers to the LCD’s LED backlight, not to a liquid-crystal arrangement. The panel may still be TN, VA, or IPS; “LED” by itself does not identify which one.
Is OLED an LCD panel type?
No. OLED is a different display technology. LCD pixels modulate light from a separate backlight, while OLED pixels emit their own light. OLED is not another mode alongside TN, VA, and IPS. Intel’s gaming monitor guide explains this distinction and notes that LCD technologies can vary.

How should you choose among LCD panel types?
Start with the trade-off that matters most for your use, then compare evidence for the exact monitor models you are considering. Panel type is a useful first filter, not a substitute for model-level specifications and measurements.
