The best laptop webcam depends on more than its megapixel count: check the exact configuration, how it performs in your lighting, whether you need Windows Hello, and how well the microphone handles calls. For a detachable Windows device, the Surface Pro 11 is a camera-focused option; for a conventional laptop, the MacBook Pro 14 (M4) and selected ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition configurations are worth considering. These are use-case examples from published guides and reviews, not winners from a shared comparison test.
How to choose a laptop for video calls
Confirm the camera in the exact configuration
A model family can offer different camera hardware. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact regional SKU and configuration you plan to buy. This matters especially for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition, whose webcam options vary by specification.
Look beyond resolution
A 1080p webcam is a sensible target for regular calls, but resolution alone does not establish how the image looks in a dim room or guarantee a sharper result in every calling app. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide notes that a service may not support a camera’s maximum resolution, using Zoom’s 1080p ceiling as an example. Check the service and account settings you use rather than assuming the camera’s full resolution will reach other participants.

Consider the whole call
Lighting, image processing, microphone quality, and the video-call service all affect the experience. Look for review samples made in lighting like yours, and check microphone comments separately from camera specifications. A laptop that looks good on paper can still be a poor fit for calls if its microphone or low-light image is inadequate.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Decide whether you need infrared
An RGB camera captures the image used for video calls. An infrared (IR) sensor serves a different purpose: on supported Windows devices, it can enable Windows Hello facial sign-in. Some laptops combine both, but a high-resolution RGB camera alone does not establish that face sign-in is supported.

| Model | Camera information reported | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Surface Pro 11 | Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide lists a front-facing 12MP camera with IR and Windows Studio Effects, including automatic framing, eye-contact correction, and background blur. | A detachable 2-in-1 for people who want a tablet-style device as well as a laptop. Account for the keyboard requirement and its cost when comparing it with a conventional laptop. |
| Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M4, 2024) | Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide lists a 1080p webcam and describes it as high quality. | A MacBook option for people whose other needs justify a Pro model. It may be more computer than necessary if your primary goal is simply a 1080p webcam. |
| Razer Blade 16 | Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide lists a 1080p webcam and Windows Hello functionality. | A gaming laptop with strong performance capabilities; that hardware may be unnecessary if everyday video calls are the main requirement. |
| Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition | Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide reports webcam choices up to 10MP: 5MP or 10MP depending on the selected specification. It also describes Windows Hello compatibility, a wide field of view, and automatic distortion correction. | A business-laptop option. Verify whether the specific configuration has the 5MP or 10MP camera rather than relying on the model name alone. |
| Dell XPS 14 (2026) | Tom’s Hardware reports an 8-megapixel camera with IR for Windows Hello. In the review’s sample, the reviewer found the image sharp, clear, and color-accurate in the office lighting tested. | Consider it if you want a Windows laptop with IR. The favorable image assessment describes one reviewer’s sample and lighting, not a guarantee for every room. |
| Dell XPS 13 (2026) | TechRadar reports a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello facial recognition. The review describes low-light performance as only okay and microphone quality as average. | A compact Windows option, but those review notes show why it is worth checking image and audio performance—not just resolution. |
| ASUS Zenbook A14 (2026) | Windows Central reports an IR sensor supporting Windows Hello and describes the webcam as decent. | A Windows laptop to consider if face sign-in matters. Windows Central notes that video meetings use more battery. |
Is a 1080p webcam enough?
For many routine meetings, 1080p is a practical target, but it is not a promise of 1080p video at the other end of a call. The camera, app, account settings, network, and the service’s supported resolution all play a part. A 4K sensor likewise does not mean calls will be delivered in 4K or look visibly better.
Recommended Free Tools
Digital Camera World’s guide says most laptops have 720p webcams, with higher-end models offering 1080p or 4K. That is a broad observation from the guide, not a quantified market-wide statistic. Compare real image samples in similar lighting and check the service settings you actually use before paying extra for a higher-resolution sensor.

Can an external webcam fix the problem?
If your laptop otherwise meets your needs, an external webcam can be a practical alternative to replacing it. Lenovo’s Performance FHD Webcam datasheet lists 1920 × 1080 RGB video at 30 frames per second by default, IR mode at 352 × 352 at 15 frames per second, and Windows Hello support. It also specifies dual microphones, a 95-degree lens, 4× digital zoom, several mounting options, and a sliding privacy shutter. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; confirm compatibility, stock, and the exact product revision before purchase.
An external camera does add a device to mount and connect, so consider your desk setup and portability needs. It may be a better-value fix when the built-in camera is the main shortcoming, but it will not upgrade the laptop’s other hardware or necessarily improve its microphone if you keep using the laptop’s built-in audio.

Match the laptop to your setup
- Choose by operating system and workload first. A MacBook, business laptop, detachable 2-in-1, and gaming laptop serve different needs. Do not buy a more powerful or expensive category solely for its webcam.
- Check the call environment. If you often meet in low light, prioritize comparable review samples over a higher resolution number.
- Check sign-in requirements. If you want Windows Hello face sign-in, verify that the exact device has the required IR hardware.
- Account for battery and accessories. Video meetings can affect battery life, and a detachable tablet may require a separately selected keyboard.
- Verify the exact SKU before checkout. Confirm camera configuration, regional availability, and current price from the seller or manufacturer.
