A laptop screen privacy filter is a physical panel that limits what people can see from the sides of your display. Choose one by matching its width, height, and aspect ratio to the laptop’s active screen—not by diagonal size alone—then check its attachment method, finish, and touchscreen compatibility.
What a laptop screen privacy filter does
A privacy filter sits over the display and narrows the angle from which the screen is clearly visible. It can make on-screen content harder to read from an adjacent seat, but it does not secure the laptop, encrypt information, or prevent someone directly behind you from seeing the display.
Privacy-angle descriptions are not presented on a shared testing standard in the cited product listings. Kensington says its MagPro filter “limits viewing angle to +/- 30°,” while 3M describes the PF133W9B as providing “black out” privacy from side views outside a 60-degree viewing angle. These are manufacturer product claims, not independent comparative test results. See the Kensington MagPro listing and 3M PF133W9B listing.

How to choose a filter that fits
Measure the active display area
Check the width and height of the visible screen area and its aspect ratio, such as 16:9 or 16:10. A diagonal measurement alone is not enough: two displays with the same diagonal can have different proportions, and a filter that is too wide or tall may not fit correctly. Compare your measurements with the manufacturer’s stated filter dimensions and compatibility details.

For reference, Kensington lists a 12.5-inch 16:9 MagPro version measuring 277 × 162 mm. 3M lists its 14.1-inch 16:10 BP141W1B at 304 × 190 mm. These are specifications for those particular variants, not universal sizes. Check the Kensington MagPro product page and 3M BP141W1B product page for the relevant model details.
Check the bezel and attachment method
Filters attach in different ways, and the laptop’s bezel or edge-to-edge display design can affect which method works. Kensington describes a magnetic strip on MagPro for quick attachment and removal, and says the design suits slim-bezel or edge-to-edge displays. 3M lists a COMPLY flip attachment and adhesive strips for the BP141W1B, and identifies it as suitable for raised-bezel screens. Confirm the exact variant’s installation details before buying.

Choose the finish and touch support you need
A matte surface can reduce reflections, while a glossy surface preserves a more reflective finish. Some models are reversible, letting you choose between the two sides. 3M describes the BP141W1B as reversible from matte to gloss and touch compatible. Those features are specific to that listing; do not assume another filter supports touch input or offers both finishes.

Consider where you use the laptop and how much side visibility you want to limit. Manufacturers describe viewing angles differently, so read the chosen model’s wording rather than treating angle figures from different brands as directly comparable. A privacy filter is a physical viewing aid, not a substitute for locking the screen or avoiding exposure of sensitive information in public.
