A lit power button does not confirm that a laptop has completed startup. The computer may have power but be stuck before its startup checks, fail while loading the operating system, or be running with a blank display. Start by noting whether fans or keyboard lights come on, whether a manufacturer logo appears, and whether you hear or see diagnostic beeps or flashes. Those clues determine the safest next step.
First, decide whether to wait or troubleshoot
If a Windows or BIOS update may be in progress, keep the charger connected and wait at least five minutes before forcing a shutdown. HP warns that an update can temporarily leave the display blank and that interrupting it may damage the computer (HP Support).
On applicable ASUS devices, a recent reset or memory change can trigger memory training with no display for approximately one to three minutes. Keep the computer connected to power and do not force it off during that period (ASUS Support).

Check the power source and remove accessories
- Disconnect nonessential devices. Unplug USB drives, docks, external storage, and other peripherals. Leave only the laptop and its power adapter connected.
- Check the power path. Confirm the outlet works and the charging connector and adapter are firmly seated. If the adapter has an indicator light, note whether it is lit. Dell recommends checking the AC-adapter LED and trying a known-working adapter if one is available (Dell Support).
- Use only a compatible adapter. Match the laptop model’s required voltage, wattage, connector, and charging protocol. Lenovo advises using approved adapters and model-specific instructions (Lenovo Support). Do not assume a universal charger is suitable.
- Observe what changes. Note fan activity, keyboard lighting, any logo or sound, and the exact color and pattern of diagnostic lights or beeps. Those details are more useful than the power-button light by itself.
Use the reset procedure for your exact laptop
A power or embedded-controller reset can sometimes clear a stuck power state, but the procedure and timing vary by brand and model. Follow the current support page or manual for your exact laptop rather than treating one manufacturer’s instructions as universal.

- HP’s example procedure disconnects peripherals and the adapter, holds the power button for about 15 seconds, then reconnects power (HP Support).
- MSI specifies an embedded-controller reset lasting more than 25 seconds with AC power disconnected in the situations covered by its instructions (MSI Support).
- ASUS describes a 40-second embedded-controller reset for applicable scenarios (ASUS Support).
These are examples of different model-specific procedures, not interchangeable steps. After a reset, allow the laptop time to respond before repeating it.
If Windows seems to be running but the screen is blank
When startup sounds or other signs suggest Windows has loaded, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may flicker or the computer may beep if the shortcut works. You can also press Windows+P to cycle display modes (Microsoft Support).

If the laptop supports an external display connection, connecting a monitor can help distinguish a built-in display problem from a broader startup failure. If no manufacturer logo appears, Windows shortcuts are less likely to help; use the laptop’s preboot diagnostics instead.
When to stop and contact support
Record the laptop’s model, the power and charging-light behavior, and any beep or blink pattern before contacting the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Dell separates no-power, POST, boot, and video problems because they need different troubleshooting paths (Dell Support). MSI also directs users to official service if its applicable reset procedure does not restore the logo (MSI Support).

Do not open the case or reseat internal components as a generic first step. Without the model, warranty status, and repair experience, internal work may be unsafe or make the problem harder to diagnose.
