A keyboard that works at first and then stops after about three minutes does not have a universal three-minute timeout. The delay usually marks a change in software, power state, temperature, or a hardware fault becoming repeatable. The fastest way to separate those causes is to test the keyboard before Windows or macOS loads, then compare it with an external USB keyboard.

  1. Restart and open BIOS/UEFI, the manufacturer startup menu, or preboot diagnostics.
  2. Leave that screen open for at least five minutes and test the affected keys when they normally fail.
  3. Connect a wired USB keyboard and test it in Windows or macOS.

If the built-in keys fail in BIOS or diagnostics, suspect the keyboard, ribbon cable, embedded controller, firmware, or motherboard. If they work before the operating system loads but fail only after login, investigate settings, drivers, hotkey utilities, power management, and recent updates.

First identify what actually stops working

Record the exact symptom rather than treating every keyboard problem alike:

  • One key, several adjacent keys, or a recognizable matrix such as 1-Q-A-Z.
  • All letters, the number row, numeric keypad, function keys, or only Ctrl, Alt, Shift, or the Windows key.
  • The entire built-in keyboard, keyboard and touchpad together, or input only in one application.
  • Wrong characters rather than no characters; this points toward layout, Num Lock, Fn Lock, or a stuck modifier.
  • Keys that work only when held down; Slow Keys, Filter Keys, or damaged switches are possible.

At the failure point, move the pointer, open a text editor with the mouse, press Caps Lock, check whether audio continues, and watch for a frozen screen or rising fan noise. If the entire computer is locked up, the keyboard may only appear to be the problem.

The five-minute isolation test

Test before Windows or macOS

  1. Shut the laptop down completely.
  2. Power it on and repeatedly press the model-specific startup key. Depending on the manufacturer, this may be F2, F10, F12, Esc, or Delete; no key is universal.
  3. Open BIOS/UEFI, the startup menu, or built-in hardware diagnostics.
  4. Leave the screen open for at least five minutes and test the keys.

HP documents Esc for its Startup Menu and F10 for BIOS settings; its keyboard diagnostic can run for up to three minutes. That test duration is a limit of the diagnostic, not proof that a keyboard should stop after three minutes (HP keyboard troubleshooting). Lenovo likewise separates keyboards that work in POST or BIOS from those that fail only in the operating system (Lenovo guidance).

Compare an external keyboard

Use a wired USB keyboard, preferably connected directly rather than through a hub. If it works while the built-in keyboard fails, the internal keyboard path or its manufacturer software is the leading suspect. If both keyboards fail, investigate Windows or macOS, USB, a system freeze, power management, or the motherboard.

Observation Likely direction Next test
Built-in keys fail in BIOS Keyboard, cable, firmware, embedded controller, or board Run OEM diagnostics and arrange service
Built-in works in BIOS but fails in Windows Setting, driver, utility, update, or power state Safe Mode/clean boot and driver checks
External keyboard works normally Internal keyboard assembly or its software Inspect patterns, update OEM packages, test preboot
Both keyboards fail while pointer and display also freeze Broader system, thermal, storage, memory, or power fault Save work if possible and troubleshoot system stability
Failure follows sleep or lid closure Power-state, firmware, or driver problem Compare restart with full shutdown and update firmware

If it fails only in Windows

Turn off keystroke filtering

In Windows 11 open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. In Windows 10 open Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard. Temporarily disable Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Toggle Keys, then test again (Microsoft accessibility guidance). These settings fit delayed, ignored, or hold-to-type input better than an abrupt total failure.

Check layout, Num Lock, and Fn behavior

Verify the selected language and keyboard layout, Num Lock, and Fn Lock. Test in a plain text editor as well as the browser or game. Function and multimedia actions may require Fn and depend on OEM hotkey software (Dell keyboard guidance).

Reinstall the keyboard device

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click each relevant entry and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Restart Windows so it redetects the devices.

Then run Windows Update and install the exact model’s keyboard or hotkey package, chipset and serial-I/O drivers, and BIOS/UEFI or embedded-controller firmware from the manufacturer’s support page. Microsoft recommends checking hardware and drivers first (Windows keyboard troubleshooting). Do not use a generic driver site. Confirm the model or service tag, connect AC power, and do not interrupt a BIOS update; HP warns that an incorrect BIOS package can leave a computer unable to work (HP BIOS warning).

Use Safe Mode or a clean boot

If the keyboard remains usable in Safe Mode or a clean-boot environment, a normal-startup component is implicated. Review recently installed OEM hotkey tools, gaming or macro software, keyboard remappers, remote-control and virtual-machine tools, accessibility programs, security software, docking utilities, and KVM software. A recent update can also justify rollback or System Restore where available.

If it fails in BIOS or diagnostics

Inspect without damaging it

A single key or nearby cluster suggests a switch, matrix, debris, liquid contamination, connector, or keyboard assembly fault. Failure that changes with screen angle, palm-rest pressure, a drop, hinge work, or a battery replacement points toward the ribbon cable or chassis flex. Some laptops replace only the keyboard; others require a top-case assembly.

Shut down before cleaning, disconnect AC power, use a soft cloth and short cautious bursts of compressed air, and do not pry off laptop keycaps casually. HP advises service for damaged keyboards and cautions against removing keys on a machine under warranty (HP cleaning and warranty guidance).

Treat liquid as an urgent hardware event

After a spill, shut down immediately, disconnect power, stop testing, and do not use a hair dryer. Apparent drying does not stop corrosion. Arrange professional inspection, particularly when the laptop is under warranty or contains important data.

Run the manufacturer diagnostic

HP’s path is Device check → Input Devices → Keyboard Test. Dell provides a SupportAssist keyboard test, and Lenovo offers model-specific preboot diagnostics. A diagnostic error code or failure before the operating system loads is a strong reason to stop software troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer.

When power, sleep, or heat matches the timing

Time several failures. Note whether the delay starts at power-on, login, inactivity, a particular application, charging, sleep, lid closure, or heavy work; whether it occurs on battery and AC; and whether a full shutdown differs from Restart. A repeatable interval can indicate a service or power-state transition, but timing alone cannot establish overheating.

  • Heat becomes more plausible after gaming, rendering, charging, or blocked vents, especially with fan ramping, throttling, freezes, crashes, or shutdowns.
  • Use a hard, flat surface, keep vents clear, and remove dust from external vents. Do not disable power-management registry settings as a universal fix; internal keyboard connections vary and battery life may suffer.
  • Stop using the laptop for swelling, case separation, burning smell, or extreme heat.

A keyboard controller, connector, or solder fault can become heat-sensitive without the CPU itself overheating. Diagnostics or repair is needed to distinguish them.

Mac instructions

Check Slow Keys

Open Apple menu → System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and ensure Slow Keys is off. Apple says this setting can require a key to be held before macOS recognizes it (Apple keyboard help).

Run Apple Diagnostics

  1. Apple silicon: Shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, release when Options appears, then hold Command-D.
  2. Intel: Turn on or restart and immediately hold D; if needed, try Option-D.

Apple documents these procedures and notes that macOS Tahoe 26 and later may offer a specific keyboard diagnostic, while earlier versions may run an automatic diagnostic (Apple Diagnostics). If the keyboard fails there, use Apple service guidance rather than assuming macOS is responsible.

Workarounds while diagnosing

  • Use a wired USB keyboard; a Logitech K120 is one example (official product page).
  • On Windows, search Start for On-Screen Keyboard. On Mac, use the Accessibility Keyboard.
  • Back up important data before firmware updates or opening the machine.
  • Record the model, BIOS version, exact delay, power state, workload, affected keys, photos of damage, and any diagnostic code for support.

When repair is the right next step

Seek manufacturer or qualified repair service when keys fail in BIOS, diagnostics report an error, liquid or impact is involved, the laptop is under warranty, or the built-in keyboard fails while an external one works. Official support portals include HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Apple.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a replacement, obtain the exact model and revision, keyboard language, backlight and fingerprint-reader configuration, and whether the part is a keyboard or complete top case. Similar-looking parts can have different connectors. Repair information is available from iFixit, but model coverage and warranty implications vary.
