Spoilers for Lanterns episodes 1–7. The eighth episode, “Dirt and Stars,” was scheduled for October 4, 2026, as season one’s finale. Based on the trailers and the first seven episodes, here are six things senior entertainment reporter Tom Power expects it could reveal. These are predictions, not confirmed events; the episode had not aired when they were written.

What is Lanterns’ season 1 finale about?

HBO Max describes Lanterns as following new recruit John Stewart and Lantern veteran Hal Jordan, “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” The show stars Aaron Pierre as Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Jordan, with Kelly Macdonald also starring. Its first season has eight episodes, and the episode guide listed “Dirt and Stars” for October 4, 2026. That was the published schedule at the time of these predictions, not a guarantee of current availability.

HBO Max called the series a season finale in its official description, and James Gunn likewise confirmed “Season finale, correct” in a September 29 report. That establishes the planned season-one ending, not a season-two renewal. The six possibilities below come from Power’s reading of the trailers and episodes 1–7; none was verified as an outcome before the finale aired.

1. Sinestro creates the first Yellow Lantern ring

Power connects episode seven and the finale trailer to a factory or manufacturing plant, Sinestro’s comments about fear, and fear-inducing gas used on an alien population. His theory is that these elements could converge in the creation of a Yellow Lantern ring. The clues may point to a fear-based weapon or experiment instead; they do not confirm a ring is made.

2. John Stewart uses the ring to become a Green Lantern

One competing fan theory is that Sinestro gives Stewart the new ring and persuades him to become the first Yellow Lantern. Power expects a different turn: Stewart could use the ring to fulfil his Green Lantern destiny. Teaser footage shows him wearing Hal’s decommissioned ring, while a Hal-O-Gram warns, “you’re taking a very big risk.”

Power speculates that the new ring might be powered by fear but that Stewart’s will could overcome that influence. He also notes a fan theory that Stewart is a living Lantern Battery, though that possibility is not established by the cited clues. The finale could resolve the ring’s role in another way—or leave the question open.

3. The episode confirms Hal is dead—and may bury him again

Power reads “Dirt” in the title “Dirt and Stars” as a possible reference to Hal’s burial. Stewart exhumed Hal’s resting place in episode six, so the finale could return to the grave or show Hal being re-buried. The title alone cannot establish that this happens.

Trailer imagery offers another, separate possibility: a fire at Hal’s Rushville home and Hal lying injured with a mark resembling one associated with Manhunter healing. Power wonders whether someone tries to rescue Hal before another attack. Those images do not confirm his condition, survival, or fate in the finale.

4. Sheriff Kerry Kane killed Hal

Power’s leading suspect is Sheriff Kerry Kane. She is secretive, knows Hal is dead, and says no one witnessed the crime—details that could suggest she knows more than she has disclosed. But they do not prove she killed him. Power also considers Hal himself, Noah, and Maggie as possible suspects, and the murder’s solution was still unknown before the episode aired.

5. Noah Macon is a Manhunter—or connected to their technology

Several clues lead Power to wonder whether Noah is a Manhunter or has a connection to Manhunter technology. Kerry describes Zoe as giving her a “miracle”; Zoe tells Noah not to forget what she taught him; and Noah is presented as charismatic and ambitious. Power reads these details as suggestive, not conclusive. They could have explanations unrelated to the Manhunters, and the available clues do not establish Noah’s identity.

6. The finale sets up Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn previously described Lanterns as “a terrifying mystery that ties into our larger story of the DCU.” Power takes that as reason to expect a possible link between the finale and Man of Tomorrow. A connection might help place the series within the broader DC Universe, but no specific crossover or effect on the film had been confirmed.

What was known before the finale?

These six ideas are interpretations of the show’s first seven episodes and its trailers, not spoilers from an episode that had already been released. The episode guide listed eight weekly installments, running from August 16 through September 27 before the October 4 finale date. Dates and streaming availability can change, so check HBO Max for the current listing.
