A fullscreen crash in KWin on a second monitor is a reported problem, but the available reports do not prove that direct scanout caused this specific Edge crash. KDE Bugzilla report 521934 describes KWin crashing when a program or game opens fullscreen on a second monitor; a separate report links a direct-scanout regression to fullscreen Chromium-based app freezes on DRM virtual outputs. Those are related clues, not the same confirmed cause.
What the reports establish—and what they do not
The closest symptom match is KDE Bugzilla 521934, titled “KWin crashes when program/game opens in full-screen on my second monitor.” Its report excerpt says the issue was reproduced with Firefox and the game Buckshot Roulette. It does not identify direct scanout as the cause, and it does not establish that Edge was tested.
A different report, KDE Bugzilla 523353, concerns fullscreen Chromium-based apps freezing on a DRM virtual output with KWin 6.7.3. That report identifies a specific direct-scanout setting regression, but describes a freeze rather than the second-monitor crash in Bug 521934.

How direct scanout fits the Edge symptom
Direct scanout is a display path in which a fullscreen surface can be presented without KWin compositing it in the usual way. The Bug 523353 report says that KWin 6.7.3 stopped honoring KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 for DRM virtual outputs, allowing fullscreen Chromium-based applications to use direct scanout despite the setting and freeze on the virtual screen.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The distinction matters: Bug 523353 says physical DRM outputs were not affected by that particular regression. It does not establish that all fullscreen Chromium or Edge failures involve direct scanout, nor that direct scanout caused a KWin crash on a physical second monitor.
Separate the likely cases before applying a workaround
| Observed situation | What the cited report says | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| KWin crashes as an app or game opens fullscreen on a second monitor | Bug 521934 matches this symptom and mentions Firefox and Buckshot Roulette. | It does not attribute the crash to direct scanout or confirm Edge as the affected app. |
| Fullscreen Chromium-based app freezes on a DRM virtual output with KWin 6.7.3 | Bug 523353 ties this case to direct scanout being used despite KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1. |
It does not establish the same failure on a physical output or identify a KWin crash. |
| Cursor moves to another monitor during fullscreen | Bug 516808 reports that KWin composites instead of using direct scanout in that state. | It is not evidence that direct scanout caused a second-monitor crash. |
Is KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 a fix?
Do not treat it as a universal remedy. Bug 523353 is specifically about KWin 6.7.3 and DRM virtual outputs, where the report says this setting was no longer honored. For physical DRM outputs, that report says its regression did not apply, so it does not support the setting as a fix for a physical-monitor crash.

The Bug 523353 reporter compared KWin 6.7.2 and 6.7.3 source tags, identified commit 768eb537025b, and confirmed a proposed patch applied syntactically. The report explicitly says the patch was not compile-tested or runtime-tested. It is therefore not a verified fix.
What later Plasma notes say
KDE’s June 27, 2026 Plasma 6.7.2 update records a fix for a KWin crash related to variable refresh rates in multi-monitor setups and improved fullscreen video playback performance in Chromium-based applications. The notes do not say that either change fixes the exact second-monitor direct-scanout crash described here.

What to include in a useful bug report
To determine whether your Edge failure matches either report, record the details that distinguish them:
- Exact Plasma and KWin versions, including whether the system is on KWin 6.7.3.
- Whether the second display is a physical DRM output or a DRM virtual output.
- GPU model and graphics driver.
- Edge version and whether the failure is a KWin crash, an application freeze, or only a stuck fullscreen display.
- A crash backtrace, if available, and the steps that reliably trigger the failure.
These details help distinguish the symptom-matching crash report from the virtual-output Chromium freeze report; the cited excerpts do not publish a complete KDE diagnostic checklist.
