Kubernetes runs and coordinates containerized applications across a cluster of machines. You describe the state you want through its API; the control plane works to make that state happen, while worker nodes run the application workloads. You can learn the essentials with a browser playground or a small local cluster—without setting up production infrastructure.

How Kubernetes is organized

Start with the cluster: a group of machines and Kubernetes components managed as one system. The control plane coordinates the cluster and tracks the desired state submitted through the Kubernetes API. A node is a worker machine where application workloads run. In a local learning setup, these roles may be combined or represented differently from a larger production cluster.

A container packages an application and its runtime dependencies. Kubernetes schedules containers in units called Pods; a Pod is the smallest deployable unit in Kubernetes and can contain one or more closely related containers. A Deployment describes and manages the desired number and configuration of application instances, including replacing Pods when needed. A Service provides a stable way to reach a set of Pods, even as individual Pods change.

This is a desired-state system, not simply a command that starts a process. You tell Kubernetes what you want; its control plane coordinates work to bring the cluster toward that state.

Choose a practice environment

For a first lesson, use a browser playground if you want to avoid installation. Choose a local cluster if you want to practice with tools on your own machine. The Kubernetes project recommends learning environments such as kind, minikube, or a playground; its setup guide treats third-party tools as external to the project. Review the Kubernetes learning-environment options.

Option Setup and local implementation Best fit
Browser playground No local cluster installation; the playground supplies the environment. Quick experiments when you want to start without configuring your computer.
kind Runs Kubernetes cluster nodes in Docker containers on your computer. Local practice when you already use Docker and want to create and remove clusters.
minikube Runs a single-node Kubernetes cluster for local learning. Following beginner exercises with a local cluster.
kubeadm-style setup Requires substantially more cluster administration than a first learning exercise. Defer this until you have a reason to practice more production-like setup.

A local one-node cluster is useful for learning, but it is not a model of every production topology. In common production layouts, control-plane nodes may be separate from worker nodes. The Hello Minikube tutorial introduces the local exercise and makes clear that a learning cluster is not production infrastructure.

Follow the beginner learning sequence

The official Kubernetes Basics path progresses from creating a cluster to deploying and exploring an application, exposing it, scaling it, and updating it. Follow that sequence rather than trying to learn every Kubernetes object at once. Exact sample commands and container images in tutorials can change; use the current commands on the linked tutorial pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a cluster. Use the cluster-creation instructions for your chosen environment. The cluster introduction explains the control plane and nodes in the context of a Minikube cluster.
  2. Deploy a sample application. The first deployment exercise uses a container image and creates a Deployment. A Deployment keeps track of the application instances Kubernetes should run. Follow the official deployment tutorial for its current sample command.
  3. Inspect the result. Check the Deployment and its Pods, then inspect events, configuration, and application logs. This helps distinguish a workload that was requested from one that is actually running, and gives you clues when it is not. The Hello Minikube walkthrough includes a small application exercise.
  4. Expose the application. A running Pod is not automatically reachable by other clients. Continue to the exposure lesson and learn how a Service provides a stable way to reach application Pods.
  5. Scale the workload. Change the desired number of application instances and observe how Kubernetes responds. Scaling a Deployment is a way to see desired state in action.
  6. Update the application. Continue through the update lesson to learn how to change the deployed application through its Deployment.

The complete Kubernetes Basics path links these stages in order. Treat it as a foundation: completing it does not establish that a cluster is production-ready.

What kubectl does—and when to use YAML

kubectl is the command-line client for the Kubernetes API. It sends requests using the active cluster credentials and context, so a command affects the cluster selected in your current configuration. Before experimenting, make sure that context points to your practice cluster rather than another environment.

Imperative commands—commands that directly request an action—are convenient for a first experiment. They make it easy to create a Deployment and inspect what Kubernetes created. As you learn, look at the resources themselves and practice describing the desired configuration in YAML.

With a declarative workflow, you save the desired configuration in a file and use kubectl apply to ask Kubernetes to create or update the resources to match it. Kubernetes guidance prefers declarative configuration files and kubectl apply for production management. Keep the version of kubectl within one minor version of the control plane, either ahead or behind. See the official kubectl documentation for version and usage guidance.

Clean up and decide what to learn next

When you finish an exercise, remove the sample resources using the cleanup instructions in the tutorial, then stop or delete the local cluster if you no longer need it. Cleanup commands differ by environment and by the resources you created, so use the matching tutorial rather than guessing at a deletion command.

The Kubernetes project maintains additional tutorials for building on the beginner path. If you prefer a book after gaining hands-on familiarity, Kubernetes: Up and Running, 3rd Edition is optional follow-up reading. Its publisher describes the book as intermediate to advanced, says it assumes no Kubernetes experience, and notes that readers will get the most from it if they are comfortable building and deploying server-based applications.
