Kram is a small, local-first file organizer for macOS that is designed to take a cluttered folder and sort its contents by file type. It is still under construction. The developer, Aditya Singh, announced it on September 26, 2026 and is asking people to beta test it. The core sorting idea is clear from the announcement. The safety features that would make an automated sorter feel trustworthy, such as dry-run mode, operation logs, and undo, are described as things the author wants to add, not things the announcement says already work.
The problem Kram is aimed at
The author describes the kind of folder Kram is built for in plain terms: “Hundreds of files. Random screenshots. ZIP archives. PDFs. DMGs. Old projects. Files I couldn’t remember downloading.” Anyone who has let a Downloads or Desktop folder grow for a year will recognize it. Sorting such a folder by hand is slow and tedious, which is why the author wants to automate the repetitive part.
The underlying question the project tries to answer is how to automate file management without making people afraid to run the tool at all. Most cleanup utilities ask for trust before they show any evidence of what they will do. Kram’s design is an attempt to reverse that order, though as of the announcement the mechanisms for doing so are still largely planned.

The intended workflow is straightforward. You point Kram at a messy folder, and it sorts the files into categories. The announcement names seven:

The announcement does not publish a rule-by-rule mapping of extensions to categories, so the table describes the category names rather than an exhaustive list. Where a file type could plausibly belong in more than one group, check the sorted output on a copy of your folder before relying on it.
The safety model: what the author promises and what is still planned
The author’s stated principle is to work only in locations the user explicitly chooses and to leave system files alone. That is a design commitment about scope, and it is the most important guardrail the announcement describes. The rest of the safety story is future work. The table below separates the two.

The practical consequence is that a reader should not assume a preview or undo step exists in the current build. If you run an early version on a folder you care about, treat the folder as the only safety net you have and keep a backup of it first.

Where your files go, and what is only claimed
The announcement says files stay on your Mac and are not uploaded to a server. That is the developer’s stated design. It is not independently verified. The project announcement does not link to a privacy policy, a source code review, or an implementation test that would confirm the claim. If local processing matters to your decision, you can check the project’s published code once you can reach it, or ask the developer directly before pointing the tool at sensitive folders.

What testers are being asked to try
The author invites testers to challenge Kram with conditions that commonly break file tools. These are proposed test cases, not published results. They are useful as a checklist for your own trial on a copy of a folder:
- A folder with thousands of files. The author’s own testing scenario refers to an 8,000-file folder, but no result for that scenario is reported.
- Duplicate file names.
- Files without extensions, and files with unusual extensions.
- Hidden files.
- Nested directories.
- File names with spaces and special characters.
- Permission-restricted files.
- macOS-specific files.
- Mixed file types in a single folder.
The announcement reports no benchmark, no speed figures, and no tested macOS version. Any claim about performance on large folders should wait for measured results from testers or the developer.

If you are comparing Kram with manual organization or other tools, compare the things that actually decide whether a tool is safe to run:

- Whether you can preview or reverse its moves before files are changed. For Kram, this is planned rather than confirmed.
- How it handles file-name conflicts, such as two files with the same name landing in one category.
- Which macOS versions it has been verified on. The announcement does not state one.
The announcement does not include comparative tests, so it does not establish that Kram performs better than any alternative.

Name and source caution
“Kram” is not a unique name. Searches can surface an unrelated open-source project for texture encoding and viewing, so do not borrow features, releases, or platform details from that project.
