The Koss UR55 remains appealing if you want an airy, detailed wired headphone for home listening. Its soft pads, secure fit and easy-to-drive design are practical strengths, but the open construction leaks sound and lets in outside noise. Because Koss’s current over-ear catalog does not list the UR55, availability and warranty support require extra caution.
What are the Koss UR55?
The UR55 is an older, wired over-ear headphone using a 3.5 mm mini-jack and a 1.2 m cable. KNS lists gross weight at 0.282 kg (282 g). A complete manufacturer specification table for impedance, sensitivity and frequency response is not available in the sources reviewed, so those figures should not be assumed.
How do the Koss UR55 sound?
A Head-Fi listening review characterizes the UR55 as rich, full, detailed and atmospheric. Its open-screen design contributes to an airy presentation and a more spacious impression than many closed headphones. - Desktop or laptop listening with a conventional 3.5 mm output.
When the tuning is a poor fit
- Commuting, aircraft and other loud environments where outside noise masks detail.
- Shared rooms, offices or libraries where leaked music could disturb others.
- Recording or microphone work that requires strong acoustic isolation.
Are the UR55 comfortable?
The Head-Fi review reports soft, well-padded ear pads, a secure fit and good comfort during extended wear. It also notes that the headband feels somewhat snug. The reported construction uses a metal headband, metal speaker mesh and rigid plastic. Those are reviewer observations rather than independent durability tests, so condition and age matter greatly when buying a used pair.

How much sound do the UR55 leak?
The foam pads let outside sound in and allow some headphone sound out, according to The Headphone List. This is the UR55’s most important practical limitation: it is neither noise-isolating nor suitable when privacy matters. Use it in a quiet room or a moderately noisy space only if some environmental sound and leakage are acceptable.
Do Koss UR55 headphones need an amplifier?
A Head-Fi reviewer found the UR55 easy to drive from ordinary sources and said an amplifier is not required, although an amplifier could still be beneficial. Treat that as a user report rather than a guarantee: phone, laptop and dongle outputs vary. Start with your device’s 3.5 mm jack; add an amplifier only if you need more volume, cleaner output or a particular desktop setup.

Are Koss UR55 headphones still worth buying?
They can be worthwhile at a sensible price if your priority is an open, comfortable wired headphone for home use and you accept sound leakage. They are a poor choice for travel, shared workspaces or anyone needing isolation. Since Koss’s current over-ear collection lists models such as the UR20, UR23i, UR40 and UR29 but not the UR55, treat current stock as uncertain and inspect seller details carefully.

- Confirm that the listing is specifically for the UR55 and identify whether it is new, open-box or used.
- Inspect the ear pads, headband, cable and 3.5 mm plug for deterioration or intermittent connections.

When evaluating another headphone against the UR55, compare the design and use case rather than relying on brand or age alone:
