PicoCart64 is a do-it-yourself Nintendo 64 flash cart that uses a Raspberry Pi Pico or another RP2040 board as the cartridge memory controller. It lets compatible code run on original N64 hardware; it is not a Pico that emulates an N64 by itself. The v1 Lite is the project’s most user-friendly starting point, while the RP2040 Stamp build is experimental and v2 remains heavily under development.
What PicoCart64 does
Konrad Beckmann’s project describes itself as a “Nintendo 64 flash cart using a Raspberry Pi Pico / RP2040.” The Pico supplies the cartridge-side memory control, allowing an original N64 to access a ROM loaded onto the cart. The idea was to explore whether an inexpensive, accessible RP2040 could replace the FPGAs used in many commercial flash carts.
That means the Pico is not running an N64 emulator: the console itself runs the game code. The cart’s hardware, firmware, ROM format, and console region all matter to whether a particular image will boot. The project documentation provides a ROM-to-UF2 workflow, but does not establish universal compatibility with every N64 game.
Which PicoCart64 version should you choose?
| Design | Controller and memory | ROM capacity and features | Maturity and fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| v1 Lite | One Raspberry Pi Pico/RP2040 board; the official Pico has 2MB onboard flash. | Best suited to homebrew and small ROM images. The README does not state a universal ROM-size ceiling for every board and firmware combination. | Project README calls it the most user-friendly option and the practical entry point. |
| v1 Stamp | RP2040 Stamp from Solder Party. | Capacity and feature ceiling are not stated in the project summary. | Experimental development platform; not presented as the easiest build. |
| v2 | Two RP2040 chips with onboard PSRAM. | Project documentation states support for ROMs up to 64MB, plus Wi-Fi and SD-card support. | Still heavily under development, so treat those capabilities as developmental rather than a mature, turnkey feature set. |
For a v1 Lite build that needs more room than the standard Pico’s 2MB flash, the project README points to a WeAct RP2040-compatible board with 16MB flash. That is a board-specific upgrade path, not a change to the standard Pico’s capacity. Actual usable ROM size can depend on the chosen board, firmware, and image; do not assume the flash number is identical to the largest ROM the cart can load.

What you need to build a v1 Lite
The v1 Lite bill of materials is intentionally small. At minimum, plan for the cart PCB and a Raspberry Pi Pico. The listed electronics also include a BSS84 MOSFET and an optional 0603 100k resistor. An unpopulated PicoCart64 Lite v1.4 PCB has been offered through Solder Party; alternatively, the project’s Gerber files can be sent to a PCB fabricator. Check the project documentation and supplier availability before ordering, since current stock and prices are not established here.
- PCB thickness: Specify 1.2mm so the board fits the N64 cartridge slot.
- PCB edge: Sand the raw 90-degree insertion edge to a 45-degree chamfer. The project warns that an unchamfered edge can wear the console connector.
- Board choice: Use the standard Pico for the documented entry build, or consider the documented WeAct 16MB-compatible RP2040 board if the standard flash capacity is too limiting.
The Stamp and v2 development work should not be mistaken for the same simple parts list as v1 Lite. A related development fork lists additional items including an RP2040 Stamp, USB-C receptacle, ferrite bead, push button, and microSD-card slot. Confirm the schematic and bill of materials for the exact revision you intend to assemble before buying parts.

How to turn a ROM into a PicoCart64 cartridge image
The official UF2 ROM Builder converts a supported z64 ROM into a UF2 file that can be flashed to the RP2040. Use firmware for the N64’s video region: NTSC or PAL. The builder’s documented workflow is:
- Select NTSC or PAL firmware in the ROM Builder to match the intended console region.
- Provide a z64-format ROM. The documented input format is z64; the project documentation does not establish support for other image formats.
- Leave compression enabled unless you have a specific reason to disable it.
- Build the UF2 file with the ROM Builder.
- Put the Pico into BOOTSEL mode and flash the generated UF2 to it using the normal UF2 loading process.
- Power-cycle the board before starting the N64.
Use ROM images you are authorized to use. A correctly generated UF2 does not guarantee that every image will work: the project describes v1 Lite as suitable for homebrew and small ROMs, and its documented capacity depends on the RP2040 board in the cart.

What the 133MHz release variant means
The project’s release page records a stable release dated 2024-10-31. Its 133MHz variant is not an RP2040 overclock: the release notes describe flash reads at 66.5MHz and a slower-latency N64 bus configuration. The notes also say the SRAM test is expected to fail with that variant. Treat that test result as specific to the release configuration, not as proof that the board is defective. Since PicoCart64 development is active, check the project’s GitHub releases and documentation for the firmware matching your hardware and intended region before building a UF2.
