No. AI can produce and modify code, but that does not make learning to code pointless. Knowing how to code still helps you define a problem, give an AI tool useful context, check whether its output works, find faults, and maintain the result. The change is that writing every line yourself is no longer the only way to produce code; understanding what the code should do and whether it does it remains valuable.

Does AI make learning to code pointless?

No. AI changes how code can be produced, but writing a plausible-looking solution is not the same as solving the right problem. Someone still needs to decide what the program should do, identify constraints, and judge whether the result behaves correctly.

That distinction matters whether you are learning your first language or building software at work. An AI assistant can help draft a function or suggest a test, but its output may misunderstand the request, omit an edge case, or introduce a defect. Coding knowledge gives you a way to recognize and investigate those problems rather than accepting an answer because it looks convincing.

Do you still need to know how to code if AI can write code?

You may not need to hand-write every routine line to use AI in a coding workflow. You do need enough understanding to guide the tool and take responsibility for the code that enters a project. The balance depends on the task: routine, well-defined work may be easier to delegate than ambiguous work with important consequences.

Part of the work What AI can help with Why coding knowledge still matters
Producing code Drafting or modifying code from a prompt You need to specify the intended behavior and recognize when the draft does not fit.
Defining the problem Working from the context you provide You must decide what the actual need is, what constraints apply, and which details the tool needs.
Testing and debugging Suggesting tests or possible fixes You need to assess whether tests cover the expected behavior and trace failures to their causes.
Maintaining a system Helping with changes and explanations You need to understand how a change affects surrounding code and future work.

This comparison is a practical way to think about the shift, not a measured scale of which tasks AI can or cannot do. The important distinction is between generating a candidate answer and establishing that it is correct, safe for the intended use, and maintainable.

What do surveys say about AI’s effect on coding work?

In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 52% of developers agreed that AI tools and/or AI agents had a positive effect on their productivity. The survey reports 31,636 responses to this item. This is a measure of respondents’ perceptions, not a controlled measurement showing that AI caused a particular productivity increase for developers generally. Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey

That qualification does not make the finding useless: it indicates that many respondents felt AI had helped. But a person’s perceived productivity is different from verified output quality or results for an entire team or software system. The survey alone does not show that every developer benefits, that every task is faster, or that generated code needs less review.

Where does human understanding still matter?

A Microsoft Research study published in October 2025 examined 860 developers using mixed methods. Its findings suggest that openness to AI use varies with how developers evaluate a task. The study describes strong current use and a desire for improvement in coding and testing, high demand for reducing toil such as documentation and operations, and clearer limits for identity- and relationship-centered work such as mentoring. The practical lesson is not that AI is good at one fixed category of work and bad at another. Rather, a tool’s fit depends on the task and on what a person must contribute: context, judgment, validation, or interpersonal understanding. That is an interpretation of the study’s task-level findings, not a universal formula for dividing work between people and AI.

  • Routine or repetitive work: AI may help produce a first draft, but the result still needs to meet the actual requirements.
  • Novel or ambiguous work: Defining the problem and supplying missing context can matter as much as producing code.
  • Consequential changes: Testing, reviewing likely failure modes, and understanding the system’s dependencies are essential to deciding whether a solution is fit to use.

Are developers still learning to code?

Yes, according to Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey: 69% of developers said they had spent time in the preceding year learning coding techniques or a programming language, and 44% said they had learned with the help of AI-enabled tools. These are self-reported behaviors, not evidence that one learning method is more effective than another. The survey’s respondents are self-selected, so the figures should not be read as a universal rate for all developers. Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey

A separate GitHub-published survey found that 57% of respondents believed AI coding tools had helped improve their coding language skills. That finding reflects respondents’ beliefs; it is not a controlled experiment measuring learning outcomes. GitHub survey on AI and developer experience, 2023

AI can therefore be part of learning without replacing the need to learn. A useful learning interaction might involve asking for an explanation, comparing approaches, or investigating a failing test. The learner still benefits from trying to predict what code will do, checking the explanation against behavior, and understanding why a fix works.

What does knowing how to code mean now?

It means more than being able to type syntax, and it does not require refusing help from AI. In an AI-assisted workflow, coding knowledge is the ability to move from an intended outcome to a working, checked, and maintainable solution. That may involve writing some code yourself and reviewing or adapting code generated by a tool.

  1. Specify the behavior. Describe the desired result, relevant inputs, constraints, and cases that must be handled.
  2. Use tools deliberately. Treat generated code as a proposal to inspect, not proof that the task has been solved.
  3. Check behavior. Run the code and test expected cases, boundary conditions, and failure paths that matter to the problem.
  4. Debug with evidence. Use errors and test results to locate the cause, then verify that a fix addresses it without breaking other behavior.
  5. Maintain the result. Understand enough of the surrounding system to make changes safely and explain how the code is expected to work.

The evidence cited here shows adoption and reported perceptions, along with task-specific patterns in how developers evaluate AI. It does not establish a single objective measure of coding competence, a general causal productivity effect, long-term learning outcomes, or how AI will affect developer employment. It is not a basis for claiming that coding knowledge has become obsolete.
