The KitchenAid KES6551 combines a burr grinder, espresso machine and steam wand in one semi-automatic unit. Its smart dosing and flat-base 58 mm portafilter aim to make espresso preparation more manageable, but it is still a hands-on machine: expect to adjust grind and dose rather than rely on a fully guided or push-button workflow. It is best suited to someone who wants to learn and control the process, not someone looking for a superautomatic machine that handles every step.
What the KitchenAid KES6551 is—and isn’t
The KES6551 is a semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated burr grinder, a steam wand and a hot-water spout. KitchenAid’s U.S. product listing describes smart dosing intended to dispense a suitable volume for one or two shots at the press of a button. That convenience does not make it a superautomatic: the user still works with the grounds and portafilter, and the grind and dose can need adjustment to suit the beans and preferred extraction.
KitchenAid also highlights fast-heating technology and a cleaning-cycle notification. Those features simplify parts of the routine, but the machine does not offer the kind of guided grind recommendations or assisted tamping that TechRadar noted on some competing models.

Smart dosing helps, but dialing in remains hands-on
The one- or two-shot dosing option provides a convenient starting point. In TechRadar’s hands-on review, however, the reviewer found that experimenting with grind and dose was necessary to reach a preferred extraction. Treat smart dosing as an aid to portioning, not a guarantee that every bean will produce an ideal shot without adjustment.

The portafilter is a practical design highlight
The KES6551 uses a commercial-grade 58 mm portafilter with a flat base. KitchenAid presents the flat base as making tamping easier and more stable; TechRadar’s reviewer likewise praised its convenience. It is a useful design choice for someone learning to prepare espresso, though it does not remove the need to tamp and prepare the puck yourself.
Milk drinks are part of the workflow
The multi-angle steam wand lets you steam milk for drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes. TechRadar described the grinder, wand and hot-water spout as covering the essentials, while noting that some rivals offer additional modes or more guidance. If you mainly want straightforward espresso and milk drinks, the KES6551 covers those core tasks; if you want a machine to coach each step, compare workflows carefully.

Whether the KES6551 is worth its asking price depends on the current local price and how much you value its integrated grinder, metal-clad build and hands-on workflow. At a similar price, compare not just the feature count but also how much assistance you want with grinding, dosing and tamping, what accessories are included, and the warranty in your market.
