The KIOXIA XG8 2TB is an OEM-oriented PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD in the M.2 2280 format. KIOXIA rates high-capacity XG8 models for sequential reads up to 7,000 MB/s and writes up to 5,800 MB/s, but those are manufacturer maxima—not guaranteed sustained speeds. It may suit a compatible laptop or desktop, but check the exact model, host support, and the seller’s warranty and return terms before buying.

What is the Kioxia XG8 2TB?

The XG8 is a client SSD family KIOXIA introduced in 2022 for high-end notebooks, desktops, gaming systems, workstations, and data-center boot applications. That is the manufacturer’s intended-use description, not an independent endorsement. The 2TB base model is identified as KXG80ZNV2T04; KIOXIA lists the separate SED variant as KXG8AZNV2T04. Check the drive label and listing carefully, since the model numbers identify different variants.

KIOXIA’s XG8 product brief lists 512 GB, 1,024 GB, 2,048 GB, and 4,096 GB capacities. The 2,048 GB base model is single-sided and uses TLC flash. Capacity labels in decimal GB are not the same as the usable capacity an operating system may display.

Does the XG8 fit your laptop or desktop?

The XG8 is an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe drive. M.2 describes its physical card and connector format; it does not, by itself, mean a system supports NVMe or PCIe 4.0. Before ordering, verify the target host’s documentation for its slot type and supported drive lengths.

KIOXIA EXCERIA G3 – 2TB PCIe 5.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD
  • High-Speed Performance: The KIOXIA EXCERIA G3 2 TB SSD delivers read speeds up to 10,000 MB/s and write speeds up to 9,600 MB/s for gaming, content creation, AI generation and video editing
  • Future-Proof Interface: Built with backward-compatible PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0c technology for high-performance computing, fast file access and smooth multitasking across demanding applications
  • Easy-to-install M2 Form Factor: Designed for low power consumption and reduced heat generation, the M.2 internal SSD installs directly into compatible notebooks, desktop PCs, custom builds and creator workstations
  • Memory made in Japan: Built with KIOXIA BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory for high-density storage and fast data access, supporting gaming, media playback, 4K video editing and RAW image workflows
  • Spacious Storage: The 2 TB SSD provides ample space for games, applications, media files and professional projects; KIOXIA SSD Utility helps users monitor, manage and maintain the drive
  • Confirm there is an M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe NVMe, rather than only a SATA M.2 drive.
  • Check physical clearance, including whether a laptop’s existing drive has a single- or double-sided restriction and whether a desktop heatsink can fit.
  • Check the system’s supported capacity and whether its firmware can boot from an NVMe drive if this will be the boot disk.
  • If using an external enclosure, verify that it supports the drive’s M.2 NVMe interface; an M.2 SATA-only enclosure will not suffice.

KIOXIA’s specifications establish the drive’s format and interface, but compatibility depends on the particular laptop, motherboard, enclosure, and firmware. The product brief does not establish compatibility with every host.

How fast is the Kioxia XG8 2TB?

KIOXIA’s client SSD data sheet gives high-capacity XG8 models maximum sequential read speed of 7,000 MB/s and sequential write speed of 5,800 MB/s. These are rated maxima, not a promise of performance in every computer or workload. Actual results depend on the host, workload, thermal conditions, firmware, and how much data is being written.

Silicon Power 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 2280 SSD Solid State Drive (SP002TBP34A60M28)
  • PCIe Gen 3x4 interface with read speeds up to 2,200MB/s and write speeds up to 1,600MB/s
  • TBW=1200
  • The warranty terms on all of its SSDs are based on whether the warranty length or TBW limit occurs first.
  • To support a Silicon Power PCIe SSD, the system must have an M. 2 connector with only an M key. The Silicon Power PCIe SSD does not have a b notch and therefore, the b key on the SSD connector will prevent it from being inserted

The same data sheet lists typical power consumption of 7.7 W for the 2,048 GB model. That is a typical specification, not a maximum power draw or a guarantee for every operating condition; in a compact laptop, check the host’s thermal and power constraints.

What happens during long writes?

In its review of the 2TB drive, Tom’s Hardware observed writes near 6 GB/s for about 26 seconds before cache behavior affected sustained writing. The reviewer estimated roughly 160 GB of cache in that test. This is one review’s result and estimate, not a universal figure: firmware, workload, temperature, and capacity can change behavior.

  • Spacious 2TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
  • Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades

  • Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users

For a typical operating-system drive or everyday applications, short bursts and random access may matter more than a very long sequential write. If you regularly move large files or write hundreds of gigabytes at a time, look for comparable tests that measure sustained writes after the cache is exhausted rather than choosing from peak sequential ratings alone.

Is the Kioxia XG8 a good SSD?

It is a plausible option when the price and ownership terms are right and the host supports its interface. Tom’s Hardware described it as an able PCIe 4.0 SSD that did not stand out. That review-era assessment does not establish how it compares with current alternatives or prices.

Because the XG8 is an OEM drive, the way it was sold matters. A drive bundled with a computer or resold separately may not have the same support route as a retail product. ServeTheHome cautions that buyers should not assume a drive obtained through an OEM system or another channel receives direct KIOXIA support; contact the seller or system maker about service for the specific unit.

Tom’s Hardware reported a five-year warranty and no official TBW endurance rating for the OEM product at the time of its review. That secondary, review-period reporting should not be treated as a warranty promise to every buyer or region. Confirm the applicable warranty, seller, and return policy before purchase.

How to compare the XG8 with another SSD

Do not make a buying decision from peak speed figures alone. Compare specific models and capacities on the factors that affect your system and use:

  • Fit: M.2 length, NVMe versus SATA support, capacity limits, and boot compatibility.
  • Heavy-write behavior: independent sustained-write results after cache, ideally under a workload like yours.
  • Ownership: who provides warranty service, how long coverage lasts for your specific purchase, and the return terms.
  • Power and cooling: the drive’s requirements and your system’s ability to manage heat.
  • Current price: compare the same capacity and similar support terms at the time you buy; the XG8 cannot be called a current value winner without like-for-like market prices.
