Kingston added a red finish to its compact XS1000 external SSD line in August 2024. The XS1000 Red is available in 1TB and 2TB capacities and uses the same advertised USB 3.2 Gen 2 performance class as the existing range—not a separate red-only hardware upgrade.
What Kingston announced
Kingston announced the red XS1000 in regional releases dated August 26, 2024 (US) and August 27, 2024 (Taipei). The announcement describes the product as a new colorway for the existing XS1000 family. Kingston SSD business manager Keith Schimmenti said the company introduced it for customers who “wanting to stand out and express themselves through color.”
The official announcement is available from Kingston Technology. The red finish is also shown alongside black options on the XS1000 product page.
Models and capacities
| Capacity | Red model number | Advertised maximum speed |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | SXS1000R/1000G | Up to 1,050MB/s read; up to 1,000MB/s write |
| 2TB | SXS1000R/2000G | Up to 1,050MB/s read; up to 1,000MB/s write |
Kingston lists these as maximum manufacturer ratings. Actual throughput varies with the computer or device, USB implementation, software, workload and other conditions. Kingston specifies a USB 3.2 Gen 2 host for optimal advertised performance; slower USB ports will limit transfer rates.

- Compact, pocket-sized form factor
- Speeds up to 1050MB/s with USB 3.2 Gen 2
- Increased storage up to 2TB
Is the red XS1000 faster than the black model?
No performance advantage for the red finish is established in Kingston’s announcement or product documentation. Red and black are presented as color options within the XS1000 line, so choose between them for appearance, capacity and current availability rather than expecting different speeds. The published figures are not independent benchmark results.
Size, weight and construction
- Dimensions: 69.54 × 32.58 × 13.5mm
- Weight: 28.7g
- Casing: metal and plastic
Kingston says the XS1000 received a 2024 Red Dot Design Award for Product Design. That recognition concerns design and does not certify speed, endurance or drop resistance; Kingston’s datasheet provides the product specifications.
Rank #2
- Compact, pocket-sized form factor
- Speeds up to 1050MB/s with USB 3.2 Gen 2
- Increased storage up to 2TB
What is included in the box?
- 12-inch USB-C drive-to-USB-A host cable
- USB-A-to-USB-C adapter
The supplied cable and adapter cover USB-C and USB-A host connections, so a separate connection cable is not normally required. Kingston also lists optional rubber sleeves sold separately.

Before connecting a mobile device
- Confirm that the phone or tablet supports external USB storage and the required USB-C or adapter arrangement.
- Check available power, file-system support and whether the device’s file manager can mount the drive.
- Use the appropriate adapter and safely eject the SSD before unplugging it.
Before expecting full speed
- Identify the host port’s USB generation; USB 3.2 Gen 2 is the interface Kingston specifies for optimal results.
- Check the computer’s cable and port, since a slower link negotiates at a lower rate.
- Allow for workload and software differences when copying many small files versus large sequential files.
Warranty and support
Kingston states a limited five-year warranty and free technical support for the XS1000. Warranty coverage, eligibility and service procedures can vary by country and seller, so verify the local terms with Kingston or the retailer before purchase.
How to choose between the red XS1000 options
Choose 1TB when
- You mainly need a portable library for documents, photos or a moderate game and media collection.
- The lower-capacity model meets your working-space requirement and backup plan.
Choose 2TB when
- You regularly move large video, project or game files.
- You want more headroom before reorganizing or deleting data.
For either capacity, compare the exact red SKU, host interface, included connectors, device compatibility, warranty terms and live local price. The red finish itself does not establish a technical improvement over black XS1000 models.
Rank #4
- UP TO 5X FASTER THAN OLD-SCHOOL PORTABLE HARD DRIVES(4). Transfer large files quickly with read speeds up to 1000 MB/s(2), so you spend less time waiting and more time creating.
- DURABLE DESIGN. With no moving parts and drop protection up to 2 meters(3), help your files stay protected on the go.
- POCKET-SIZED PORTABILITY. Slim and lightweight enough to fit in your pocket or bag without adding bulk.
- SPACE FOR MODERN FILES. Store photos, videos, and AI-generated edits with fast, reliable performance.
- USB-C READY. Plug in and start transferring instantly, no drivers or setup needed.
Bottom line
The Kingston XS1000 Red is a compact 1TB or 2TB colorway added to the XS1000 family in August 2024. It retains the line’s advertised USB 3.2 Gen 2 ceiling of up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, includes both USB-A and USB-C connection options, and carries Kingston’s stated limited five-year warranty. Buy it for the red design or the capacity that fits your workflow—not because the color promises higher performance.
