The Kingston DC1000M is an enterprise-oriented, mixed-use NVMe SSD for servers and storage arrays with a compatible U.2 connection. It combines PCIe Gen 3 x4, capacities from 960GB to 7.68TB, power-loss protection and a manufacturer-rated endurance of 1 drive write per day (DWPD) for five years. Its headline speeds are specifications rather than results from a new test, and it will not work in every 2.5-inch drive bay.
What the Kingston DC1000M is—and who it suits
The DC1000M is a 2.5-inch, 15 mm U.2 SSD built around PCIe NVMe Gen 3 x4 and 3D TLC NAND. Kingston positions it for mixed-use data-center workloads, including servers and storage arrays. Its four nominal capacities are 960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB and 7.68TB.
This is a fit for an enterprise host that supports U.2 NVMe and needs capacity-specific performance and endurance options. The product’s 2020 launch announcement describes its data-center focus; check current product status and support before buying, as availability and warranty terms can vary by region and seller. Confirm the connection and drive path before comparing capacity or speed. Kingston specifies a U.2 drive measuring 100.09 × 69.84 × 14.75 mm and weighing 160g. A 2.5-inch SATA bay may accept the drive physically, but that alone does not establish electrical or protocol compatibility: the DC1000M uses PCIe NVMe, not SATA.
#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
- Check the backplane: verify that the server’s U.2 bay and backplane support PCIe NVMe drives, not only SATA or SAS.
- Check the full connection: confirm the required cabling, power connection and host support for the drive. If using an adapter, verify that the server or workstation, PCIe slot, cabling and power path all support the intended setup.
- Check operating conditions: match the selected model’s power needs and ensure the system can keep it within Kingston’s stated operating range of 0°C to 70°C.
StorageReview reported using an adapter card in a Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 because of a compatibility issue in its setup. That illustrates why physical fit is not enough; it does not establish that any particular adapter will work in another host. StorageReview’s DC1000M review
Capacity-specific performance and endurance
The figures below are Kingston-published specifications, not independent measurements. Sequential speed and steady-state 4K random IOPS vary by capacity. The 4K ratings are for steady state; Kingston describes its latency methodology as a random 4KB, queue-depth-1 FIO workload reporting completion time for 99.9% of commands, and notes that the cited latency values are based on the 960GB capacity. Usable formatted space is less than the nominal capacity.

Kingston’s datasheet says the DWPD rating is derived using the JEDEC Enterprise Workload (JESD219A). DWPD is a rated endurance measure, not a guarantee that every workload will use the same amount of data or reach the same service life. Kingston DC1000M datasheet
What changes between 1.92TB and 3.84TB?
Both models have a 3,100 MB/s sequential read rating. Kingston rates the 3.84TB model for slightly faster sequential writes—2,700 MB/s versus 2,600 MB/s—and 210,000 4K random write IOPS versus 205,000. The 1.92TB model has the higher rated 4K random read figure: 540,000 IOPS versus 525,000. The larger model doubles nominal capacity and has twice the listed TBW (6,725 versus 3,362); both carry the same 1 DWPD over five years rating.

Protection, endurance and warranty
Kingston lists power-loss protection, end-to-end data-path protection, telemetry monitoring and enterprise SMART tracking. These are useful safeguards and monitoring features, but they do not remove every risk of data loss or hardware failure; maintain appropriate backups and system protections.
The limited warranty is five years or ends when the drive’s NVMe Percentage Used health attribute reaches 100, whichever occurs first. Check Kingston’s current terms for the region and sale in question; the warranty should not be treated as unconditional coverage for the entire five-year period. Kingston’s product datasheet

Power draw also varies by capacity. Kingston lists idle power from 5.14W to 5.74W, average write power from 9.10W to 17.06W, and maximum write power from 9.80W to 17.88W across the range. Check the exact model against the host’s power budget and cooling design.

What independent reviews found
Published tests offer context, not a universal prediction for another server. StorageReview evaluated the DC1000M in enterprise server systems, including a Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 and Dell PowerEdge R740xd, with application workloads including MySQL and SQL Server OLTP. Its report also notes the adapter-card workaround in the ThinkSystem setup, so host configuration is part of the result.
Best Value
- Fast start up, loading and file transfers
- More reliable and durable than a hard drive
- Multiple capacities with space for applications or a hard drive replacement
HotHardware tested on a Threadripper 3990X system and reported the DC1000M as competitive in some conditions, behind selected competing drives in most of the cited IOMeter patterns, and ahead at larger ATTO transfer sizes. HotHardware cautioned that its remodeled test-bed results should not be compared with its earlier articles. These outcomes depend on the reviewers’ test systems, software, workloads, firmware and comparison drives; neither review establishes performance for every deployment. HotHardware’s DC1000M review
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the DC1000M the right choice?
- Consider it if your server or array explicitly supports U.2 PCIe NVMe, the capacity-specific ratings suit your workload, and the endurance and warranty conditions meet your requirements.
- Look elsewhere or verify the installation path first if the only confirmed connection is a SATA 2.5-inch bay, or if your host’s U.2 support, adapter, cabling or power requirements are uncertain.
- Compare alternatives by workload, sustained behavior, interface compatibility, endurance, power, warranty and tests that resemble your own environment—not by peak sequential speed alone.
Kingston’s ratings make the DC1000M a high-capacity enterprise option on paper, but the practical buying decision starts with U.2 NVMe compatibility. Treat the published performance as a set of model-specific specifications and use independent results only as evidence for the workloads and systems those reviewers actually tested.
