For the safest first-time route, do not skip a Kingdom Hearts story entry outright. Follow Square Enix’s collection grouping: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, then HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, then Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind content. If you want to save time, you can watch the included story films for two entries instead of playing their original versions.
Can you skip any Kingdom Hearts games?
There is no reliable blanket rule that a particular entry is irrelevant or safe to miss. The official collections group the first six stories together, then three adventures leading toward Kingdom Hearts III. That makes the collection order a conservative route for a newcomer, not a scene-by-scene play order or a guarantee that every story dependency is mapped.

The useful distinction is between skipping gameplay and skipping story. Square Enix includes HD cutscene compilations for 358/2 Days and Re:coded in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX. You can watch those films rather than play the original versions while still taking in their included story material.

Square Enix’s official collections provide a straightforward route through the main grouped material. The first collection is described as containing the first six stories; the second contains three key adventures leading up to Kingdom Hearts III. Square Enix’s series overview describes the series as a collaboration with Disney centered on Sora, a Keyblade wielder, traveling with Donald and Goofy through Disney worlds.

Which entries can you watch instead of play?
358/2 Days

Choose based on your platform, whether you want playable versions or story films, and whether you want Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind in the same bundle.
| Collection | What it covers | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] | The three groups: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. | The all-in-one option if it is available for your platform and in your region. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS – The Story So Far | HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue; it does not include Kingdom Hearts III. | An older PS4 collection to consider only after checking current availability. |
Square Enix announced KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] for October 8, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows. The publisher notes that regional store availability can vary. Its physical version requires an internet connection to download additional data. Check your local store listing and platform before buying. See Square Enix’s collection announcement and its platform and availability details.
What remains uncertain if you skip a whole entry?
The official collection pages confirm what is included and how Square Enix groups the stories, but they do not give a title-by-title account of the consequences of skipping each game. They also do not comprehensively detail mobile-service story arcs. If following the connected narrative is your priority, use the collections’ grouping and watch the included films rather than treating an unnumbered entry as automatically optional.
