Kingdom Hearts is a Square Enix action role-playing series made in collaboration with Disney, following Sora as he travels through Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy. For newcomers who want one package covering the main saga through Kingdom Hearts III, Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is the clearest current starting point—but its physical edition requires an internet download and is not a complete offline install.
What is Kingdom Hearts?
Kingdom Hearts is an action role-playing game series developed and published by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney. Its central character, Sora, wields a Keyblade and travels to Disney worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy to confront the Heartless and restore peace. Square Enix sums up the series as “the story of Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” Square Enix’s series overview introduces the setting and characters.

The first game was released in March 2002. Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million package shipments and digital sales worldwide as of the end of June 2025; that is a publisher-reported combined figure, not a 2026 total or a count of units purchased by end users. Square Enix Holdings’ 2025 annual report provides the release date and sales measure.
Where should a newcomer start?
For the broadest straightforward package, start with KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III]. Square Enix groups the material into three collections, taking the series through KINGDOM HEARTS III and its Re Mind DLC. This is an editorial recommendation, not a publisher-declared mandatory play order: the product is organized as grouped collections rather than a simple chronological sequence.
#1 Best Overall
- KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a double-sided poster.
- A value packed bundle featuring three collections: KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC).
- This product is also included in other bundle sets. Please ensure you do not purchase the same content more than once.
- Platform-exclusive Keyblade "Midnight Blue" included with purchase!
- To play the physical version of KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], an internet connection and additional data download are required.
If you want to follow the story in release order, play the included games in their original release sequence where possible, and treat the collection’s video compilations as story material rather than playable games. The publisher’s product pages describe what is included, but do not establish one required order for every title.
What is included in Collection [I~III]?
| Collection | Contents | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- | The first six stories in the product grouping | Two entries are HD cutscene compilations, not fully playable games. Do not count all six stories as playable games. |

Which platforms and formats are available?
Square Enix lists physical editions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. Digital versions are listed for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows storefronts. Regional listings, stock, and editions can differ, so confirm the platform and region on the product page or retailer listing before buying.
The physical collection is not a complete offline copy: Square Enix says an internet connection is required to download additional data to play it. If you need to play without internet access, verify the download and installation requirements before purchase rather than assuming the boxed edition contains everything on its media.

What comes after Kingdom Hearts III?
Square Enix lists KINGDOM HEARTS IV for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a late 2027 release window on its announcement page. The publisher describes Sora in the mysterious city of Quadratum and says further details will be revealed in the future. Late 2027 is the current stated window, not a guaranteed release date. Check Square Enix’s announcement for updates.
