If your Kindle Fire (now called a Fire tablet) won’t download apps, first check whether the problem affects every app or just one. For all-app failures, test the Internet connection, restart the tablet, clear the Amazon Appstore cache, check internal storage and updates, and review account or profile restrictions. If only one app is affected, check compatibility and country availability before changing device settings.
“Kindle Fire” is the older name many people still use for Amazon’s tablets. The exact troubleshooting menus vary by generation and Fire OS version.
Start by checking the model before changing settings: open Settings > Device Options, then look for Device Model or About Fire Tablet. If an app is missing from search entirely, the tablet may be incompatible rather than unable to download it.
1. Check whether the problem affects every app
Open Games & Apps, or the Apps or Games app, and try downloading a different free app from the Amazon Appstore.

- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).

- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
- No apps download: investigate Wi-Fi, registration, Appstore software, storage, parental controls, or tablet updates.
- Only one app fails: check compatibility, country availability, and the app developer’s requirements.
- The app downloads but will not install: focus on internal storage, compatibility, Appstore data, and profile restrictions.
Amazon Appstore availability is filtered by the app’s required Fire OS/API level, hardware features, country, and marketplace. An incompatible app can be hidden or shown without an install option.
2. Test the tablet’s Internet connection
A Wi-Fi icon only confirms that the tablet is connected to a router. It does not prove that the router has working Internet access.
- Open Silk and load a simple website.
- Turn off Airplane mode if it is enabled.
- Move closer to the router and retry the download.
- Restart the router if other devices also have problems.
- Try downloading the app through a smartphone’s personal hotspot.
If the download works over the phone hotspot but not at home, the Fire tablet is probably fine. The cause may be a router problem, DNS filtering, a captive portal, network congestion, or an Internet service outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPublic Wi-Fi may require a sign-in
Hotels, libraries, schools, and airports often require a browser sign-in before allowing downloads. Connect to the network, tap the connected network if prompted, and select Sign in. If the page does not appear, open Silk and visit a basic website to trigger the login screen.
Reset saved network settings
On supported Fire OS versions, open Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset. Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward and enter the password again. This removes saved network information, so use it after checking the password and router.
3. Restart the Fire tablet
A restart clears temporary service and Appstore problems without deleting your apps or files.
- Press and hold the Power button for up to three seconds.
- Select OK when the shutdown request appears.
- Wait for the tablet to turn off.
- Press the Power button for two to three seconds to turn it on.
If the screen is frozen, disconnect the tablet from its charger and hold Power for about 40 seconds, or until it restarts. Reconnect the charger after it restarts, then press Power for two to three seconds if necessary.
4. Force-stop and reset the Amazon Appstore
The Appstore can become stuck even when Silk and other Internet apps work. Clear the cache first; clear its data only if that does not help.
Fire OS 6 and newer
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps & Notifications. Some versions use Apps & Games.
- Select Manage All Applications, if displayed, or See all… apps.
- Select Appstore.
- Tap Force Stop.
- Open Storage and tap Clear Cache.
- Restart the tablet and try the download again.
If the problem remains, return to the same screen and choose Clear Data or Clear Storage. This resets the Appstore’s local data; it does not cancel purchases associated with your Amazon account.
Older Fire tablets
On Fire OS 4 through 7, the usual route is Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications > Appstore. Select Force Stop, then use Clear Cache and, if needed, Clear Data.

5. Free internal storage
Downloading an app needs room for the download, temporary installation files, and the installed app itself. The space shown as available may therefore not be enough for a large app or update.

Fire OS 7
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Under Free Up Space, select Archive Now.
- Select content to archive.
Fire OS 8
- Open Settings > Storage > Internal Storage.
- Select Archive Now, or choose Free Up Space.
Amazon-purchased books, videos, and apps are stored in your Amazon account’s cloud library. Removing eligible downloaded content from the tablet does not delete it from the account.
Some newer tablets also include Settings > Storage > Auto Archive. Amazon says Auto Archive can remove infrequently used non-Amazon apps from the Home screen after 60 days. You can reinstall an archived app from that screen or from the Appstore.
6. Install the latest Fire OS update
An old Fire OS release can prevent newer Appstore apps from installing or cause registration and download services to fail.
- Open Settings.
- Select Device Options.
- Select System Updates.
- Install an available update.
Amazon currently lists Fire OS 8.3.3.7 for several 12th- and 13th-generation tablets, including the Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire 7 (12th generation), Fire HD 10 (13th generation), and Fire Max 11. Many 8th- through 11th-generation models are listed with Fire OS 7.3.3.1. Older models may be limited to Fire OS 5.3.7.3, 5.3.6.4, 5.3.6.2, or earlier releases.
Do not install an update file intended for a different model. If automatic updating fails, download the update for the exact tablet model from Amazon on a computer, connect the tablet, swipe down and select the USB charging notification, choose Transfer files, and open the Fire drive. Copy the update file to Internal storage, disconnect the tablet, and return to Settings > Device Options > System Updates.
7. Check parental controls and child-profile approval
Parental Controls can block app downloads, purchases, the Apps and Games category, or wireless connectivity.
For an adult profile, swipe down twice, tap the Settings icon, and open Profile and Parental Controls. Check whether Restrict access to current profile is enabled.
For a child profile, a download may be waiting for approval rather than failing. In Parent Dashboard, open Content, select the child profile, choose Store Access, and enable In-App Purchase Requests and/or Store Access as appropriate. A parent must then approve the request. The child receives a notification in the Quick Settings tray with a link to the download page.

The Parental Controls password is separate from the lock-screen password. If it has been forgotten, Amazon says a factory reset is required to restore full access.

8. Correct the date, time, and Amazon registration
An incorrect time zone or clock can interfere with Amazon registration and related services.
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Device Options > Date & time.
- Turn Automatic time zone off.
- Wait five seconds.
- Turn it back on and confirm that the displayed time is correct.
Restart the tablet if the time does not update. Registration can also fail because of incorrect Amazon credentials, outdated software, a broken Internet connection, or registration to the wrong Amazon account.
If the tablet is second-hand or linked to another account, sign in to Amazon and open Devices. Select the tablet, choose Deregister, and register it again with the correct account. Deregistration temporarily removes access to that account’s digital content and Amazon services until registration is completed again.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →9. Check app compatibility and country restrictions
If other apps download normally, do not assume the Appstore is broken. The particular app may require:
- A newer Fire OS or Android API level.
- Hardware that the tablet does not have.
- A different country or Amazon marketplace.
- Google services that Fire tablets do not provide.
- Support for a newer tablet generation only.
Amazon’s device filtering uses the app manifest, minimum API level, required hardware, geographic availability, and other device characteristics. This is why an app may not appear in search or may have no download button on an older Fire tablet.
For country settings, open Manage Your Content and Devices > Preferences, select Change under Country Settings, enter the correct address, and select Update. Changing country can affect digital content and marketplace availability, so do not change it merely as a trial.
10. Check payment only for paid content
A missing payment card is usually irrelevant when a free app will not download. Payment matters for paid apps, subscriptions, and paid in-app products.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a paid download is pending or declined, sign in to Amazon and open Your Payments > Settings. Update Default Purchase Preference, select a valid payment method, and choose Continue. The billing address and payment method may need to match the country associated with the account.
When an app downloads but will not install
Treat this as a separate problem from a download that never starts. Work through these checks:
- Free additional internal storage; an SD card may not solve the installation requirement.
- Force-stop the Appstore and clear its cache.
- Restart the tablet.
- Install any Fire OS update available for that exact model.
- Check whether the app supports the tablet’s Fire OS/API level and hardware.
- Check parental controls and child-profile approval.
If only one app still fails, open its Appstore detail page and select Developer Info. The developer may have ended support for that Fire tablet generation or may be reporting a service-specific problem.

Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset removes downloaded content, returns the tablet to its original settings, and deregisters it from the Amazon account. It should come after the network, update, storage, profile, registration, and Appstore steps above.
On a working tablet, swipe down twice, tap Settings, choose Device Options, and tap Reset to Factory Defaults. Back up anything stored only on the tablet first.
If Settings will not open, power off the tablet. On most models, hold Power and Volume Down together, use the volume buttons to select Wipe data/factory reset, and press Power to confirm. The button combination and recovery screen can differ on some models.
Common claims that lead to the wrong fix
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “The Amazon Appstore shut down.” | Amazon discontinued the Appstore for Android mobile devices on August 20, 2025, but continued supporting it on Fire tablets and Fire TV devices. |
| “Every Fire tablet has the same Settings menus.” | 8th-generation and newer tablets commonly use Apps & Notifications; 4th- through 7th-generation models commonly use Apps & Games. |
| “Clearing the cache always fixes downloads.” | It can clear temporary Appstore corruption, but it cannot fix an unsupported app, country restriction, unavailable storage, or a blocked child profile. |
| “Google Play Services is required for Appstore downloads.” | Amazon Appstore downloads use Fire OS and Amazon services. Apps that depend on Google Mobile Services may be unavailable or may not function correctly. |
| “Factory reset is the first step.” | It is a later measure because it removes downloaded content and requires the tablet to be registered again. |
FAQ
Why won’t my Kindle Fire download any apps?
The most common causes are a Wi-Fi connection without working Internet, a stuck Appstore, insufficient internal storage, outdated Fire OS, parental controls, or an Amazon registration problem. Test a phone hotspot, restart the tablet, clear the Appstore cache, and check storage and updates.
Why is one app missing from my Fire tablet’s Appstore?
The app may require a newer Fire OS/API level, unsupported hardware, Google services, or a different country marketplace. Amazon may hide apps that do not meet the device’s compatibility or geographic requirements.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will clearing Appstore data delete my purchased apps?
No. Clearing Appstore data resets local Appstore information. Purchases remain associated with your Amazon account, although you may need to sign in or allow the Appstore to rebuild its local data.
Can a full SD card stop an app from downloading?
Possibly, but app downloads and installations generally need usable internal storage for temporary files. Free internal storage through Settings rather than relying only on an SD card.
Do Fire tablets need Google Play Services to download apps?
No. Apps installed through Amazon Appstore use Amazon’s Fire OS services. However, an individual app that depends on Google Mobile Services may be unavailable or may fail after installation.
What should I do if a child cannot download an app?
Check Parent Dashboard: open Content, select the child profile, choose Store Access, and review Store Access and In-App Purchase Requests. The request may be waiting for parent approval rather than failing.

Identify the Fire tablet model first, then test the Internet connection with a phone hotspot, restart the tablet, reset the Appstore, free internal storage, install the correct Fire OS update, and check profile restrictions. If only one app is affected, investigate compatibility and country availability before changing account or device settings. Reserve a factory reset for cases where the less destructive fixes have failed.
