The best children’s headboard is the one that fits the bed you own and attaches the way its listing says it should. Shape, colour and finish matter, and this guide shows how to judge them. But a headboard that is the wrong width, cannot be fixed securely to the frame or wall, or leaves pillows and toys near a sleeping child is a poor choice however attractive it looks.
Measure the bed before you compare designs
Size names do not transfer reliably between markets. A UK single mattress is generally 90 cm wide, while a US twin is about 38 inches (96.5 cm). They are close, but a headboard labelled for one may not suit the other. Compare the listed measurements on each product page instead of relying on the size name.
- Measure the mattress width on the bed where the headboard will go. Measure the frame separately if it is wider than the mattress, because some frames add side rails that affect fit.
- Check how the bed is built. Look for existing bolt holes or a rail on the frame, and note whether the bed has a solid back panel or open slats.
- Measure the wall behind the bed: usable width, the height you want the headboard to reach, and the position of windows, sockets and radiators.
- Compare those figures with the overall width, height and depth printed on the product page. If a listing gives only a bed size such as “twin” and no dimensions, treat it as incomplete.
Headboards are often wider or taller than the mattress they serve. The Pottery Barn Kids Chloe bed page, for example, gives its twin headboard as 45.5 inches wide by 55.5 inches high, which is larger than a standard twin mattress. Measure the headboard, not just the bed.

Retailers use style labels such as low, tall, winged, upholstered, panel and wall-mounted to describe the visual profile and installation method. They do not rank quality. A low headboard is not better or worse than a winged one; each changes how much visual weight the bed adds to the room.

| Style | Visual effect in a room | Attachment as described in the sources reviewed | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Keeps the bed’s profile quiet, which suits small rooms and sloping ceilings | Not stated for this style in the retailer collection reviewed; confirm on the individual listing | Whether it reaches the wall or stands free, and whether pillows need extra depth |
| Tall | Creates a strong focal point and makes the bed look more like a feature piece | Not stated for this style in the retailer collection reviewed; confirm on the individual listing | Ceiling clearance, wall fixing and whether the top edge will be within a child’s reach |
| Winged | Frames the sleeping area and gives a sheltered, cosy look | Not stated for this style in the retailer collection reviewed; confirm on the individual listing | Wing depth against the mattress and pillows, and whether the wings extend beyond the bed |
| Upholstered | Soft, padded and often the most decorative option | Varies: some are standalone, some use bolts to an existing frame, and some are integrated into a complete bed | Fabric, filling, frame material and the care label |
| Panel | Flat, simple lines that suit a minimal or traditional room | Not stated for this style in the sources reviewed; confirm on the product page | Whether the panel is rigid enough for the fixing method chosen |
| Wall-mounted | Leaves the floor and bed clear, and the bed looks lighter against the wall | Uses the wall hardware specified by the manufacturer | Wall construction, the hardware supplied, and whether the mounting method is suitable for your wall |
How headboards attach: bed frame, wall or both
Attachment is the part of the purchase most likely to go wrong, because the listing photograph rarely shows it. Read the installation section before you order.
Bolting to an existing bed frame
Some kids’ headboards are sold as standalone pieces that bolt to an existing frame. Ashley’s kids’ headboard collection includes examples that need bolts to attach to the frame, and the collection advises buyers to measure the mattress for a separate headboard. Whether bolts are supplied depends on the specific model, so check the included hardware before assuming you have everything you need.

Wall mounting
Wall-mounted designs use the hardware the manufacturer specifies. The Pottery Barn Teen No Nails Chloe Dorm Headboard, listed for use over a twin bed, is described with D-ring or adhesive mounting. Having more than one mounting option does not mean every wall or bed suits each one. Choose the method the listing permits for your wall, and follow its instructions exactly.

Integrated headboards on a complete bed
If the bed frame has no safe fixing point and the wall is unsuitable, a complete upholstered bed with an integrated headboard avoids the separate fixing problem. The Pottery Barn Kids Chloe page describes this kind of construction. Consider it when you are replacing the bed anyway.
Materials, construction and care
Constructions vary widely across kids’ headboards. The table below lists the examples documented in the sources reviewed, with the care and material details each listing gave.

Testing and certification claims apply to one product
The Pottery Barn Kids Chloe bed page states that the brand’s juvenile products are tested at third-party CPSC-accredited laboratories and that this product is GREENGUARD Gold certified. Those claims belong to that product line and that page. They do not show that every children’s headboard has the same testing or certification.

Child sleep safety: keep decoration out of the sleep space
The Abu Dhabi Public Health Center child-safety guide focuses on beds and mattresses, including crib spacing and infant sleep warnings. It warns against placing pillows, covers and stuffed toys in children’s beds because of suffocation risk.
That guidance is about sleep safety. It does not establish that a particular decorative headboard is safe or unsafe, and crib-specific advice should not be presented as a headboard standard for older children’s beds. Use the headboard for its intended purpose and keep decorative cushions and soft toys off the sleeping surface.

Replace the bed or add a headboard?
- Add a separate headboard if the existing frame has a fixing point the listing supports, or the wall can take the mounting hardware the listing specifies.
- Choose a complete bed with an integrated headboard if the frame has no suitable fixing point and the wall cannot take a mount, and you are willing to replace the bed.
- Do not force a fit if the measurements are close but not confirmed. Measure again, or choose a headboard whose listed dimensions clearly suit your bed.
A headboard that matches your bed, attaches securely and keeps sleeping space clear is a better choice than one that wins on looks alone.
