Keyword search can find the right facts without ensuring that an answer displays where they came from. Retrieval and provenance are separate: a system must ingest readable source content, return reference metadata with retrieved results, preserve that metadata during answer generation, and render usable citations in its interface. Oracle, Azure AI Search, and Sanity document pieces of that workflow, but their documentation does not establish this Oracle-to-Azure-on-Sanity setup as a tested or officially supported integration.
Why an agent can find facts but lose their sources
Finding relevant text and showing a traceable source are different jobs. Keyword retrieval can match exact words, phrases, or identifiers stored in a source. Hybrid retrieval combines keyword and vector ranking, which can also surface semantically related material. Neither retrieval mode, by itself, guarantees that an answer will include a working source citation. Oracle describes the distinction between keyword-only and hybrid search in its Oracle Agent Memory hybrid search documentation.
A citation can disappear at several points: content may not have been ingested or extracted; the retriever may return a result without the reference fields the answer layer needs; answer synthesis may omit or fail to carry those fields forward; or the interface may not render them as links. Diagnose the stages separately rather than treating a correct-looking answer as proof that provenance is intact.
Trace the source through the workflow
1. Ingest the source and extract readable text
Before retrieval can cite a document, the system needs access to its contents and some way to associate extracted text with its origin. Oracle’s Knowledge Agents documentation describes ingestion as crawling, parsing, storing, chunking, embedding, and ingestion. For a missing expected citation, Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance is: “Answers do not cite expected documents | Confirm the document was ingested, contains extractable text, and is included in the agent’s selected sources.” See Oracle’s Knowledge Agents documentation.

2. Retrieve content from the right kind of source
Azure AI Search distinguishes indexed knowledge sources from remote knowledge sources. An indexed source has a backing index; a remote source is queried at request time. The distinction matters for citation handling: indexed sources may return service-generated citation URLs, while remote sources do not return those index citation URLs. Azure says retrieval can surface remote results alongside indexed knowledge sources, but that does not make a remote result an indexed document or give it an index citation URL. Details are in Microsoft’s knowledge source overview.
3. Preserve the reference metadata returned by retrieval
In Azure’s retrieval response, a reference ID links a result to citation information. It is not the same as the document key in the backing index, the original source document’s URL, or a citation URL. In the documented preview behavior, the citation URL is an authenticated lookup into the backing index; it is not simply the original file’s public address. The application must retain and correctly map the returned reference information rather than substituting one of these other identifiers. Microsoft describes the response fields and preview citation URL behavior in Query Knowledge Base via API or MCP.

4. Carry references through answer generation and rendering
The answer layer and user interface have a responsibility the retriever cannot fulfill for them: keep the references associated with the evidence used to write the answer, then render those references as citations. If an answer-generation step receives text but discards reference IDs or their associated metadata, the final answer can be useful yet untraceable. If metadata reaches the application but the interface does not map it to a visible link, the user sees the same symptom. Inspect the retrieval response and the rendered output separately.
What Oracle, Azure, and Sanity document
These products describe different parts of a possible workflow, not interchangeable alternatives or a verified three-product integration.

| System or feature | What its documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle Knowledge Agents | Sources must be configured and ingested. Oracle lists ingestion stages and recommends checking completion, extractable text, and source selection when expected citations are missing. Oracle documentation | That an Oracle agent automatically preserves or renders Azure retrieval references. |
| Azure AI Search | Indexed and remote knowledge sources behave differently; indexed sources may produce service-generated citation URLs, while remote sources do not return those index citation URLs. Retrieval responses include reference IDs for citation linkage. Knowledge sources; retrieval response | That the application’s answer layer or interface will preserve and display references without explicitly handling them. |
| Sanity Context Knowledge Bases | The feature is an opt-in beta. It builds and reconciles entries ahead of query time, then serves them through Context MCP. Sanity states: “Each entry is a Markdown document written from the Knowledge Base’s sources, with citations back to the original source.” Sanity Knowledge Bases documentation | That a Sanity graph automatically fixes citation handling in an Azure retrieval or rendering layer, or that this exact combination is an officially supported integration. |
Check Azure API versions before relying on a capability
The API version can change which retrieval capabilities are available. Microsoft identifies 2026-04-01 as the REST API version for production workloads using generally available knowledge source types with minimal extractive retrieval. It identifies 2026-08-01-preview for preview capabilities such as query planning and answer synthesis. Treat those as version boundaries, not performance measurements, and verify that the endpoint and code use the version whose features they depend on. Microsoft documents the retrieval flow and version distinction in its Agentic Retrieval overview.
A practical way to diagnose missing citations
- Verify source readiness. In Oracle, confirm that the expected source was ingested, has extractable text, and is selected for the agent, following the documented troubleshooting checks.
- Identify the retrieval source type. For Azure, determine whether the result comes from an indexed or remote knowledge source. Do not expect a remote result to have an indexed citation URL; see the source-type documentation.
- Inspect the raw retrieval response. Check whether results include reference IDs and the citation information associated with them. Keep reference IDs distinct from index document keys and original source URLs, as described in the Azure retrieval API guidance.
- Follow the reference through synthesis. Confirm that the answer-generation step receives the reference metadata along with the retrieved text and retains the relationship between each claim and its source.
- Check the rendered citation. Confirm that the interface maps each retained reference to the appropriate citation link and displays it with the answer. A reference present in an API response is not necessarily a citation visible to the user.
- Confirm feature availability. Check the API version and whether the behavior in question is generally available or preview. If using Sanity Context Knowledge Bases, account for its opt-in beta status and the possibility that beta limits may change; see Sanity’s documentation.
What this means for the proposed architecture
An Oracle-to-Azure agent using a Sanity graph is best treated as an architecture to validate, not as a documented turnkey path. The available vendor guidance supports useful design checks: source ingestion and extraction, the indexed-versus-remote distinction, reference preservation, citation rendering, and feature-version boundaries. It does not demonstrate that combining these products will preserve provenance end to end. Test the actual response fields and user-visible links for each source type and each answer path before relying on citations.
