Expel announced on October 1, 2024, that Kevin Mandia, founder of Mandiant, had joined its board of directors. Mandia said he was drawn to Expel’s leadership, products, services, and focus on customers. The appointment adds a veteran cybersecurity executive to the board of a company that provides managed detection and response (MDR) services.

Who is Kevin Mandia?

Mandia founded Mandiant, the cybersecurity company known for investigating breaches and helping organizations respond to them. Expel described him in its announcement as bringing more than three decades of security leadership and venture capital expertise.

Axios reported that Mandia joined Expel as an independent director. Expel’s October 1 announcement confirms the board appointment but does not use the “independent director” classification. Axios reported the appointment; Expel’s board announcement provides the company’s account.

Why did Mandia join Expel’s board?

Mandia said he joined because he believed in Expel’s leadership, products, and services, as well as its commitment to addressing customers’ security challenges. In Expel’s announcement, he said: “I believe in Expel’s leadership, products, and services, along with its commitment to solving critical security challenges for its customers, and that is what excites me as I join this remarkable team.”

What does Expel do?

Expel describes its business as managed detection and response. In this model, a provider helps monitor security activity, investigate potential threats, and respond to incidents for client organizations. Expel says its service operates 24/7/365. Those are descriptions of the company’s offering, not an independent assessment of its performance or a comparison with other MDR providers.

What did Expel report about its business?

In the October 1, 2024 announcement, Expel said its revenue grew 50% year over year from FY23 to FY24 and that it had more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue as of FY24. These are figures reported by Expel; the sources cited here do not establish that they were audited or independently verified. Expel’s press release contains the figures and appointment announcement.

What the appointment establishes

The announcement records Mandia’s appointment to Expel’s board as of October 1, 2024. It does not establish his current board status beyond that historical appointment, so it should not be treated as confirmation that he remains a director today.
