A Kentucky man says he and two friends heard a knock in the woods near Hodgenville, then saw a large, dark figure when he shone a spotlight into the trees. The account, filed with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO), describes an alleged Bigfoot encounter—not a verified identification.
What happened near Hodgenville?
BFRO Report #82512 places the incident on River Road, a small public gravel road off Howardstown Road near Hodgenville in Larue County, Kentucky, not far from Rolling Fork Wildlife Management Area. Witness Clayton Sims says it happened around 10 p.m. on August 23, 2026. He and two friends had visited the lookout before. Read the BFRO report and follow-up.
Sims says the group heard what sounded like a distant knock and waited silently for about 20 seconds. One friend suggested whistling or howling because it “could be a Bigfoot.” Sims says he whistled and then heard sounds like sticks or saplings breaking. The group got back into their vehicles, drove farther down the road to turn around, and stopped at the lookout on the way back.

In his written account, he said: “I shined a spotlight into the woods and was just looking.” He then described seeing a black, hairy figure that appeared to be about 7–8 feet tall, initially facing away before turning slightly toward the group. Sims described an ape-like face outline, a cone-shaped head, and yellowish-green eye-shine. He says the group left immediately.

How far away was the figure?
The distance differs between the witness’s written account and investigator Charlie Raymond’s follow-up. Sims’s submission places the figure around 40 yards from the truck; Raymond summarizes the distance as about 50–60 yards. Neither figure is an independent measurement. Raymond also describes the encounter as lasting about five seconds and characterizes the light as a bright hunting light.
Raymond’s follow-up adds Sims’s description of a very bulky build, broad shoulders, a thick chest, a short neck, and long black hair. These are details attributed to the witness, not physical findings.

What does the BFRO investigator conclude?
Raymond says he interviewed Sims by Zoom and found him credible because his account remained consistent across the submission, text messages, an initial phone call, and the video interview. Raymond wrote: “I found the witness credible.” That is the investigator’s assessment of Sims and the consistency of his account; it does not independently establish that the figure was Bigfoot.

The BFRO lists the report as a Class B account. The organization’s classification and Raymond’s credibility assessment are not the same as independent confirmation of the creature’s identity.

What evidence is available—and what remains unverified?
The available record is testimony: Sims’s written report and Raymond’s follow-up summary. The sources reviewed do not provide a photograph or video of the figure, or physical evidence establishing what it was. The account therefore documents what Sims says he saw, but readers cannot use the published material to independently identify the figure.
Sims also relays local stories about coon hunters’ dogs disappearing and tracking collars being found in trees. Those are secondhand stories attributed to Sims, not evidence corroborating this particular encounter.

Why the account is drawing attention
The report combines a nighttime sound, a whistle and response, and a brief spotlight sighting—details that make it a striking alleged encounter. OutKick published a story about it on October 5, 2026, following the BFRO account and quoting Raymond’s assessment. Neither the news coverage nor the investigator’s opinion changes the central evidence: the figure’s identity has not been independently verified.
