KEMET agreed to buy all of Arcotronics Italia S.p.A. for €17.5 million on August 10, 2007. Contemporary coverage converted that equity price to about $23.8 million—often rounded to $23 million—but the headline figure did not include the substantial debt and other liabilities KEMET assumed.
How much did KEMET pay for Arcotronics?
KEMET’s agreed price for 100% of Arcotronics’ outstanding share capital was €17.5 million. The approximately $23.8 million dollar equivalent was a contemporary conversion, not a separate payment amount. The deal was announced on August 10, 2007, with Arcotronics being sold by Blue Skye (Lux) S.à r.l. KEMET’s announcement and filing described Arcotronics’ 2006 consolidated sales as approximately €150 million, or about $207 million at then-current exchange rates.
The equity price alone does not describe the transaction’s financial scope. At closing, KEMET reported assuming about €100 million in net financial debt. In its fiscal-2009 filing, KEMET reported the assumed net financial debt as €98.0 million and other long-term liabilities as €35.1 million. Those filing figures are distinct from the €17.5 million paid for the shares; they should not be added to the headline price as though KEMET paid them to the seller.
What did Arcotronics make?
Arcotronics manufactured plastic film, metallized plastic film, and wet tantalum capacitors. Its machinery business made equipment for battery and film-capacitor production. The acquisition therefore brought KEMET both capacitor products and manufacturing-equipment operations, not just a single capacitor line.

A plastic film capacitor is a current comparable component category, not evidence that Arcotronics-branded products remain available today. The historical transaction sources establish what Arcotronics made at the time; they do not establish present-day branding or inventory.
When did the acquisition close?
- August 10, 2007: KEMET announced its agreement to acquire Arcotronics for €17.5 million for the equity.
- October 1, 2007: Germany’s Federal Cartel Office approved the transaction without restrictions. KEMET said it expected completion by October 15.
- October 12, 2007: KEMET announced that the acquisition had closed.
The completed acquisition added seven facilities: Sasso Marconi, Monghidoro, and Vergato in Italy; Landsberg in Germany; Towcester in the United Kingdom; Kyustendil in Bulgaria; and Anting-Shanghai in China. KEMET’s closing announcement described the addition as a strategic milestone and welcomed Arcotronics employees to the company.

Why did KEMET buy Arcotronics?
KEMET presented Arcotronics as a complement to its earlier 2007 acquisition of the Evox Rifa Group. The stated aims were to broaden KEMET’s product offerings and technology base and strengthen its position in European film-and-paper capacitors. Arcotronics’ range and European operating footprint fit that strategy; the deal also added manufacturing expertise and machinery operations.

What happened to Arcotronics’ machinery business?
In 2014, KEMET agreed to sell the Machinery division it had acquired with Arcotronics to Manz AG. The division made machines for lithium-ion battery, film-capacitor, and electrolytic-capacitor production. The announced arrangement provided for all 83 employees to transfer to Manz, which also agreed to supply capacitor equipment to KEMET for four years. KEMET’s 2014 announcement describes that later transaction.
The 2014 sale concerned production equipment, not the original acquisition of Arcotronics’ capacitor business. It illustrates how the scope changed over time: KEMET bought the broader company in 2007, then divested the machinery division while arranging continued equipment supply.
