A 2010 experiment showed that energetic electrons could transfer from lead selenide nanocrystals into titanium dioxide in less than 50 femtoseconds. It did not produce a working solar cell or demonstrate a 66% efficiency. “Keeping the heat up” referred to trying to extract some of the excess energy that hot electrons normally lose as heat—not to heating a panel.
Why hot electrons matter in solar cells
A semiconductor absorbs photons and creates charge carriers when the photons have enough energy. If a photon carries more energy than the material’s band gap, the resulting electron can begin with excess energy. In a conventional photovoltaic material, that electron quickly cools; the excess energy is dissipated as heat rather than converted into useful electrical output.
The proposed alternative is to extract an electron while it is still “hot,” before it loses that extra energy. In principle, capturing more of the photon’s energy could reduce this particular source of loss. It is a research concept, not a claim that warming an ordinary solar panel improves its output.
What the researchers demonstrated
William A. Tisdale and colleagues studied an interface between colloidal lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystals and titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which served as an electron acceptor. Using time-resolved optical second-harmonic generation, they observed hot-electron transfer across that interface. The study reported charge separation in less than 50 femtoseconds and coherent vibrations of atoms at the TiO₂ surface. The paper’s abstract and publication record describe the laboratory observation.

The team found that appropriate chemical treatment of the nanocrystal surface enabled transfer much faster than expected. That result matters because hot electrons cool rapidly: transfer at the interface must happen on an ultrafast timescale if their excess energy is to be captured.
What the result does—and does not—establish
| Evidence or claim | What it means |
|---|---|
| Charge separation in less than 50 femtoseconds | A timescale reported for separation across the PbSe–TiO₂ interface in the 2010 study; it is not a measurement of a complete solar cell’s output. |
| Transfer of hot electrons | An observed interfacial process in a laboratory sample, not proof that a finished device can collect the charge usefully and reliably. |
| 66% efficiency | A possible eventual implication discussed in 2010 reporting, not an efficiency measured by the experiment or a verified product specification. |
A fast transfer event is an important piece of the proposed mechanism, but a photovoltaic device must do more than separate charge at one interface. It must collect that charge and produce usable electrical power. The contemporaneous report said the researchers had not demonstrated a working solar cell using the method; interface chemistry and engineering remained to be solved. Chemistry World’s 2010 report presented 66% as a potential future implication, not an experimental result. Xiaoyang Zhu, a researcher on the team, cautioned: “It’s a very exciting implication, but this is only one scientific step.”

How to read the headline today
“Keeping the heat up” is shorthand for retaining usable excess energy in hot electrons long enough to extract it. It does not describe a demonstrated way to make a panel more efficient by heating it. Likewise, the 66% figure belongs to a 2010 projection tied to a proposed design. It should not be treated as a current benchmark for commercial solar panels or as the performance of a cell built in the study.

The experiment established an ultrafast interfacial process; it did not establish that the process could deliver the projected efficiency in a complete photovoltaic device.
