Replacing one part can keep an older phone in service for much less than a new handset costs, but only when the part is inexpensive for your model, the rest of the phone is sound, and you will use it long enough to spread the cost. A claim that a repair cost “way less” than an upgrade holds up only when both prices are written down and compared for the same period of use. This guide shows how to run that check.
What European price data shows about repair versus replacement
The most detailed public benchmark available is a 2023 European Commission impact assessment that reports smartphone repair prices across its dataset. Use it for scale, not as a quote for your phone today. It reflects original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) repair prices in that dataset as of 2023.

The gap between those two rows is the main lesson. A battery is a modest share of a new phone’s price on average, while a display can approach half of it. The part you replace decides whether a repair is a bargain or a near-replacement, so the phone’s brand matters less than the component’s category.

Why the part matters more than the phone
Huawei UK’s guidance describes rechargeable batteries as consumables whose performance deteriorates with use. A battery is therefore a wear part, and replacing it addresses a known limit of the hardware. A cracked display or a water-damaged board is different: the visible failure can hide other faults that only a diagnosis will reveal, and the repair bill can grow once the phone is opened.
Battery replacement
If the battery is the failing part, the repair is usually self-contained. Confirm that the shop or service center will test the rest of the phone before it starts, so a battery quote does not turn into a larger job halfway through.
Display replacement
A display repair carries more risk of extra cost, because the screen may be bonded to other components and the repair price can climb sharply. Compare the quote with the replacement price before you commit, and ask whether the display is an OEM part or an aftermarket one.
Six checks before you call a repair cheaper
- Get the full quote, with parts and labor shown separately. Ask whether it is a fixed price or a diagnostic estimate that can change.
- Price the replacement you would actually buy. Use the model and storage size you would realistically choose, and include any accessories you would need to replace.
- Ask about other faults. A diagnosis can reveal problems that add cost. Ask the shop to list them before you approve any work.
- Check the repair route and its terms. Find out whether the repair carries a warranty, whether it is done by a manufacturer service center, a program, or an independent shop, and what each route covers.
- Estimate how long you will keep the phone. The same repair means something different if you plan to use the phone for six months or for three years.
- Price for your location. Labor rates differ between countries and between cities, so use a local quote, not a national average.
How official repair programs work, and where they stop
Google’s Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program on Google Support is a useful example of how a manufacturer program is structured, but it is not a promise that other models qualify. The page limits eligibility to affected eligible devices, lists service locations by country, and says Google will provide a cost estimate before any repair starts. Program terms change, so check the current eligibility and price for your own device before you rely on them.

Steps to take before booking a repair
- Back up your data. Google’s support page advises: “Tip: Before you bring in your phone or mail-in for repair, back up your data.” Huawei UK’s guidance gives the same advice. The page does not attribute this line to a named person.
- Request a diagnosis through the manufacturer’s service channel. Huawei UK directs customers to a Huawei Customer Service Center for diagnosis. It notes that warranty and out-of-warranty arrangements depend on coverage and on inspection, so ask which applies to your phone before you approve the work.
- Get the quote and repair terms in writing. Include the parts, the labor, the expected turnaround, and whether the repair is warranted.
- Compare the quote with the replacement price using the six checks above.
- Approve the repair only if the comparison holds for the number of months you plan to use the phone.
A simple way to compare cost per month of use
Divide each option’s total cost by the months you expect to use it. The example below is illustrative, with invented figures, and is not a measured result.

This simple calculation leaves out resale value, the time needed to move your data, and the chance that another part fails in the repaired phone. Add those factors before you decide.
When an upgrade is the better choice
- The repair quote approaches the price of a comparable new phone, as display repairs often do.
- Diagnosis finds more than one fault, or the shop cannot confirm the cause of the problem.
- The repair is not covered by a warranty, and the cost of a second failure would be hard to absorb.
- The phone no longer meets the needs you have now, such as battery life, storage, or camera quality.
The Bottom Line
Replacing one part is worth it when the quote is small compared with the price of a comparable new phone, the rest of the phone is healthy, and you will use it long enough to spread the cost. Treat any personal claim of savings as a hypothesis until you have the repair quote and the replacement price side by side for the same period of use.
