Diabetes monitoring can involve a fingerstick glucose meter, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), periodic A1C tests, or a combination. The right checks and targets depend on your type of diabetes, medicines, health, age, pregnancy status, and care plan. Ask your health care team for a written plan that states what to measure, when to check, your personal targets, and what to do when a result is outside them.

What should your blood sugar be?

For most people with diabetes who are not pregnant, the CDC lists general blood glucose targets of 80–130 mg/dL before meals and below 180 mg/dL one to two hours after starting a meal. These are reference ranges, not targets for everyone. Your clinician may set different goals based on your health, diabetes history, medicines, and risk of low blood sugar. The CDC’s monitoring guidance explains these general ranges.

Ask your care team to write down your target range and the action to take for readings above or below it. Do not change medication doses based on a general range or a single result unless your care plan tells you to.

How often should you check?

There is no one schedule that fits everyone. How often to check depends on your diabetes type, medicines, and individual needs; for example, insulin treatment can affect the monitoring plan. Your care team should specify when to check, how to record results, and what to do with them. If your routine changes or your readings do not fit the plan, ask whether the schedule should be adjusted.

Choose a monitoring method that fits your care plan

A meter and a CGM measure glucose differently. A meter gives a snapshot from a small blood sample; a CGM estimates glucose in fluid under the skin and shows readings over time. Neither device choice nor specific product features should replace advice from your care team.

Consideration Fingerstick glucose meter Continuous glucose monitor (CGM)
What it measures Glucose in a small blood sample, usually from a fingertip. An estimate of glucose in interstitial fluid from a sensor on or under the skin.
What you see A single reading at the time you test. Readings and trends over time; many systems update every few minutes and may offer alerts.
Use and upkeep Requires a compatible test strip and a blood sample for each check. Requires wearing a sensor. The CDC says sensors are generally replaced every 7–14 days, depending on the system.
When another check may be needed Use the meter as directed in your plan; a clinician may advise a check to compare with a CGM. A meter check may be appropriate in some situations because CGM and blood readings can differ. Follow device instructions and care-team advice.
Practical selection factors Compatible strip availability, handling and storage, and whether the method suits your checking plan. Sensor placement and wear time, warm-up, alarms and sharing, phone or reader compatibility, prescription and coverage, and your care needs.

Using a fingerstick meter safely

  1. Wash and dry your hands before testing.
  2. Use new, unopened strips that are compatible with your meter. Follow the meter’s instructions and store strips as directed; moisture, humidity, and extreme temperatures can affect them.
  3. Use a fresh lancet for your test, and never share lancets. Do not share equipment.
  4. Record results in the format your care team recommends so you can review patterns together.

The FDA advises using a fingertip sample if you suspect a low, if symptoms do not match a reading from an alternate site, or if you do not usually feel low blood sugar. Glucose can change quickly, making alternate-site readings less reliable in those situations. Read the FDA guidance on safely using meters and strips.

Understanding CGM trends and practical limits

CGMs can show time in range (TIR), the share of time glucose stays within a selected range. The CDC describes 70–180 mg/dL as a commonly used range and 70%—about 17 hours a day—as a common goal. Individual ranges and goals vary, so use the target set with your clinician rather than treating those figures as universal. See the CDC’s CGM guidance.

Sensor attachment, skin sensitivity, device compatibility, and coverage can affect which CGM is suitable. The CDC notes that extra adhesive patches may help keep a sensor secure during bathing or swimming, humid weather, or accidental bumps; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consider skin sensitivity. Some procedures, including X-rays and CT scans, can damage some CGMs. Check your device’s guidance before a procedure, and tell airport screening staff that you wear a device when traveling.

Do you still need fingersticks with a CGM?

Sometimes. A CGM estimates glucose in interstitial fluid, so its reading may differ from a blood glucose meter reading. You may need a meter check if the device instructions call for one or the reading does not fit how you feel. Follow the instructions for your specific CGM and ask your care team when to confirm a reading with a meter. The NIDDK’s CGM information describes comparing CGM readings with a meter in some circumstances.

What A1C tells you—and what it does not

A1C is a blood test clinicians use to assess diabetes management over time, set treatment goals, and adjust care. It gives a longer-term view; it does not replace daily monitoring when your care plan calls for it. The CDC says people with diabetes should have A1C testing at least twice a year, with more frequent testing possible when goals are not being met. Your clinician should determine both your target and testing interval. A lower A1C is not automatically safer for everyone, particularly for people at risk of hypoglycemia.

Do not rely on a watch or ring that claims to measure glucose on its own

In a safety communication dated February 21, 2024, the FDA said it had not authorized, cleared, or approved a smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own. This is different from a watch app that displays data from an authorized glucose-monitoring device. Do not use a noninvasive watch or ring’s claimed glucose reading to make diabetes treatment decisions; inaccurate readings could contribute to medication errors. Read the FDA safety communication.

Make the numbers useful

Bring your meter or CGM data to appointments and review patterns with your care team rather than interpreting isolated readings in a vacuum. If you are newly diagnosed or need help learning how to monitor, ask whether diabetes self-management education and support is available. For symptoms or very high or low readings, follow your personal care plan and seek appropriate medical help.
