Keeneland’s 2026 September Yearling Sale generated a record $536.7 million in auction-ring sales, with reported post-sale deals bringing gross sales to $558.3 million. Buyers and industry leaders pointed to tax incentives, wealth gains, stronger racing purses, international interest and partnerships as factors supporting demand—but the available figures do not show how much any one factor contributed.
How much did Keeneland’s 2026 sale make?
The September 14–26 sale recorded $536,737,900 in through-the-ring sales from 2,856 horses, according to Keeneland’s September 26, 2026 results. Including $21,575,500 in post-sale transactions reported to date, gross sales reached $558,313,400.
The $536.7 million figure is the cleaner year-over-year comparison because it counts auction-ring sales on both sides. Keeneland reported $510,517,900 in through-the-ring sales for 2025. The separate 2025 total of $531,520,400 includes post-sale transactions, so it should not be compared directly with the 2026 through-the-ring figure. Keeneland’s 2025 sale release gives that earlier all-in total.

Did tax breaks help drive the record?
Tax treatment was one explanation offered by people quoted in an October 1, 2026 CNBC report reproduced by Cash Insight. Horse breeder and accountant Len Green described racehorse ownership as potentially attractive to successful buyers seeking a tax deduction and publicity. That is his characterization, not evidence that tax benefits caused the sale’s record or made a particular horse a sound investment.
The IRS says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act amended Internal Revenue Code Section 168(k) to provide permanent 100% additional first-year depreciation for qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025, subject to the law’s effective-date, acquisition and qualification rules. The IRS also describes an election to use 40% instead of 100% for the first applicable tax year. See IRS Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-06, published February 2, 2026.

This is not an automatic write-off for every racehorse purchase. The IRS guidance addresses qualified property generally; it does not determine whether an individual horse or owner qualifies, how the owner’s business circumstances affect eligibility, or how basis and timing rules apply. Buyers should have a tax professional assess the specific transaction before relying on a deduction.

- Wealth gains: The report associates stock-market gains and private-equity wealth with increased capacity to buy luxury assets. It does not measure how much that wealth affected bids.
- Stronger purses: Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin pointed to stronger purses in racing jurisdictions as supportive of the market.
- International buyers: About one quarter of yearlings were bought by international buyers, according to the report. Keeneland did not provide a country-by-country breakdown, so the figure does not establish how much came from any particular region.
- Partnerships: The largest buyer was a newly formed group of four racing partnerships and owners, reported to have spent $16.2 million on 20 horses. Arvin said partnerships can let buyers diversify their investment and enjoy purchasing alongside friends. The sale data do not establish whether syndication increased total demand or simply divided ownership among more participants.
Arvin also said buyers from the Middle East attended despite concern about the Gulf conflict, adding that Keeneland was not aware of anyone who stayed away because of it. That is her recollection, not a count of prospective buyers deterred or unaffected.

The official sale totals establish that Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale set a new record, surpassing the previous worldwide Thoroughbred auction record set one year earlier. They do not establish that the entire horse market set a record, nor do they isolate the effect of tax rules, financial-market gains, purse growth, international demand or partnerships.

The most defensible reading is that the auction had broad strength by several measures: higher through-the-ring sales, average and median prices, and more million-dollar yearlings than in 2025. The reasons cited by buyers and officials may help explain the market climate, but no cited source assigns a measured share of the increase to any one cause.
