The KDE Slimbook VI is a Linux laptop built by Slimbook in partnership with KDE. Its headline hardware is AMD’s eight-core Ryzen 7 8845HS, Radeon 780M integrated graphics, an NPU designed for local-AI workloads, upgradeable memory up to 96GB, and an 83Wh battery. It launched with KDE Plasma 6.1 and is intended to provide a tightly integrated Plasma experience rather than a generic laptop with Linux installed.

What the KDE Slimbook VI is

Slimbook manufactures the laptop while KDE supplies the software collaboration and Plasma integration. KDE’s 2024 report says the VI shipped with KDE Plasma 6.1 and has received regular updates. The product’s hardware and configuration options are listed on Slimbook’s official product page, while KDE documents the partnership and specifications in its 2024 annual report.

Ryzen 7 8845HS and Radeon 780M performance

The Ryzen 7 8845HS combines eight CPU cores with 16 threads and a boost clock of up to 5.1GHz. That makes the configuration suitable on paper for compiling software, running virtual machines, processing large projects and handling heavy browser or office workloads. The Radeon 780M is integrated graphics based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture, so it avoids the weight, heat and cost of a separate GPU but is not positioned as a workstation or high-end gaming graphics solution.

Slimbook provides selectable Performance and Energy Saving modes. Its product page says the mode can be changed in the BIOS or with Fn + F10, Fn + F11 or Fn + F12, depending on the configured shortcut. Actual sustained performance, fan noise and thermals will vary by mode and workload; the cited material does not include independent benchmarks.

What the NPU means for local AI

The 8845HS includes an NPU that KDE describes as “ready for local AI.” An NPU is a dedicated accelerator for supported neural-network operations, potentially reducing CPU load and power use for tasks such as image effects, speech processing or small on-device models.

That wording does not guarantee that every Linux AI application will use the NPU. The available specifications do not identify supported frameworks, model sizes, operating-system drivers, measured TOPS performance or comparisons with CPU execution. Buyers choosing the laptop specifically for local AI should verify support for their intended application and AMD’s current Linux software stack before ordering.

Display, battery and everyday use

The 16-inch 16:10 IPS panel runs at 2560×1600 and 120Hz. The aspect ratio offers more vertical space for terminals, documents and code than a 16:9 screen, while 120Hz can make scrolling and window movement feel smoother. The cited specifications do not state brightness, color coverage, response time or adaptive-sync support, so those details should be checked with Slimbook before purchase.

The battery is rated at 83Wh. No independent source in the available material reports runtime under a defined workload, brightness or power mode. Treat capacity as a hardware specification, not as a promised number of hours; runtime will depend on display settings, the selected performance mode, applications and battery condition.

Linux and KDE Plasma integration

The VI is supplied as a KDE-focused system rather than an after-market Linux installation. KDE reported Plasma 6.1 at launch and regular updates during 2024. That makes it a natural fit for users who want Plasma defaults, KDE applications and hardware selected with that desktop environment in mind.

Plasma is still configurable, and the Ryzen platform is standard AMD hardware, but distribution support, kernel behavior and firmware updates can change over time. Who should consider it?

  • Developers and power users: 96GB of upgradeable memory, two NVMe slots and eight CPU cores leave room for virtual machines, containers and large projects.
  • KDE Plasma users: The laptop is delivered as a KDE-partnered system with Plasma preinstalled.
  • Mobile professionals: The 16:10 1600p display, aluminium chassis and 83Wh battery are promising on paper, although runtime and panel quality still require real-world verification.
  • Local-AI experimenters: The NPU is a useful hardware feature only when the chosen Linux tools can access it; compatibility should be confirmed first.

What is not established by the published specifications

  • Current price, stock, delivery region and warranty terms.
  • Independent CPU, Radeon 780M, thermals or acoustic benchmarks.
  • Measured battery life under reproducible workloads.
  • Display brightness, color accuracy and response measurements.
  • Which Linux AI frameworks and models currently use the NPU.

These omissions matter when comparing the VI with other Ryzen Linux laptops. Check the live Slimbook configuration and terms before committing to a purchase.

Is the KDE Slimbook VI worth buying?

It is a strong candidate if your priorities are a Plasma-first Linux experience, high upgradeable memory, dual NVMe storage and a modern Ryzen platform in a large 16:10 laptop. The 96GB ceiling and non-soldered components are particularly compelling for development and virtualisation. The NPU should be treated as potential Linux AI acceleration rather than a guaranteed performance advantage until your software stack is confirmed. Because price, runtime and independent testing are not established here, compare the final Slimbook configuration against alternatives using those missing figures before deciding.
