KB5046740 is the November 14, 2024, Windows 11 version 24H2 Release Preview update that brought the operating system to build 26100.2448. Microsoft listed new Start-menu, touch, Task Manager, Narrator, and Android-sharing features alongside fixes for Windows Update, File Explorer, WSL, and other components. The announcement divided changes into gradual and normal rollouts, so gradual-rollout features might not have appeared for every Insider at the same time.
What is KB5046740?
Microsoft announced Windows 11 Build 26100.2448 (KB5046740) for Insiders in the Release Preview Channel on Windows 11, version 24H2 (Build 26100), on November 14, 2024. It is a historical preview-release announcement, not evidence that this build is still available or is the current Release Preview version.
Microsoft split the announcement into “Gradual rollout” and “Normal rollout” sections. The gradual-rollout changes might not have been available to all users immediately; the normal-rollout list was presented separately. The notes do not provide a rollout percentage or a date by which every user received each gradual item. Read Microsoft’s November 14, 2024 announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Start menu and app sharing
- Jump lists: Right-clicking a pinned Start-menu app that supports jump lists could reveal that app’s jump list. Holding Shift+Ctrl while clicking an item in a jump list opened it as an administrator.
- Android sharing from File Explorer: File Explorer’s context menu and the desktop gained an option to share content to an Android device. This required Phone Link to be installed and configured.
Touch, Task Manager, and input
- Touchscreen edge gestures: New controls appeared at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch, including options to turn off left- or right-edge gestures.
- Task Manager: The Disconnect and Logoff dialogs gained dark-mode and text-scaling support. The Performance page also displayed disk-type labels.
- Chinese and Japanese input: When an IME toolbar was active, it could be hidden in full-screen apps while the user typed Chinese or Japanese characters.
- Speech and language files: Microsoft described improvements to Windows speech-to-text and text-to-speech. Some users of Narrator, voice access, live captions, live translations, or voice typing might be prompted to update language files manually through Microsoft Store.
Narrator, search, and personalization
- Narrator scan mode: The N’ shortcut skipped past links, while L’ jumped to lists. Microsoft’s release notes explain how to turn on Narrator and scan mode.
- Windows Search: Search ran IFilters in Less Privileged App Containers (LPAC). Microsoft said this approach limits a process to needed resources and denies additional permissions by default.
- Setup wording: “Tailored Experiences” was renamed “Personalized offers” in the out-of-box experience (OOBE) settings.
Dynamic Lighting and a disabled change
- Dynamic Lighting: Its page could show placeholder behavior when no compatible device was connected, and Wave and Gradient effects gained additional directions.
- System tray: Microsoft said the simplified system tray with a shortened date and time was temporarily disabled to address issues. It was not a newly enabled feature in this release.
Which problems did KB5046740 address?
Microsoft grouped these fixes by rollout type. The announcement describes the problems addressed, but does not quantify how many affected devices received each fix.
Gradual-rollout fixes
- Servicing and updates: DISM component cleanup could stop at 71% with error 6842;
Get-WindowsCapabilitycould fail occasionally; and Windows Update could report error 0x800f0905. - Images and displays: The update addressed JPG rotation information, tiny pointer-location circles on some displays, and misplaced windows on multi-monitor systems after sleep. It also addressed Mica appearance when using slideshow backgrounds.
- Clipboard and taskbar: It fixed an issue that could leave clipboard history empty and a taskbar search appearance problem when auto-hide was selected.
- File Explorer: Fixes addressed spacing issues and a search box that could be clipped.
Normal-rollout fixes
- File Explorer: The “See more” menu could open upward; Microsoft listed a fix for that behavior.
- Windows PE on ARM64: The update addressed HTA optional components in ARM64 Windows Preinstallation Environment.
- Task Manager: The Users page could become unresponsive during keyboard use.
- Images and documents: Fixes covered GDI+ image properties and scaling, RAW image orientation, and app hangs when exporting chart objects to PDF or XLSX.
- Games and multi-monitor setups: A mouse could unlock from a game window when using multiple monitors and Xbox Game Bar; Microsoft listed a fix.
- Windows Subsystem for Linux: WSL could stop or fail to start.
Does the announcement establish current availability?
No. Microsoft’s announcement documents a Release Preview build issued on November 14, 2024. It does not establish whether KB5046740 remains available, whether it is supported now, or which later updates may have superseded it. Treat build 26100.2448 as the identity of that historical release, rather than as a statement of current Windows 11 status.
