KB5041876 is Microsoft’s August 26, 2024 release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4082 to the Beta Channel. Based on Windows 11 version 23H2, it introduced three features in a gradual rollout, listed fixes for selected problems, and removed a registry key for all Beta Channel users. The release notes also documented File Explorer crashes that still needed a fix.
What changed in Windows 11 Beta build 22635.4082?
Microsoft announced three changes that were gradually rolling out to Beta Channel Insiders who had enabled “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.” Availability could increase over time, so the announcement did not mean every eligible device would show each change immediately.
- Notification suggestions: You could turn off suggestions to disable notifications for certain apps from a notification’s ellipsis menu or in Settings > System > Notifications. “Notification Suggestions” appears in the sender list only after you have received one.
- Lock-screen media controls: While media is playing, the controls move to the lower center of the lock screen.
- Delivery Optimization settings: The page at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization received a redesign to better match Windows 11’s design.
Insiders who left the toggle off would receive new features gradually as Microsoft made them available. The release notes describe staged preview availability, not a guarantee that every feature had reached every Beta device.
Which problems did the update fix?
Microsoft listed these fixes as gradual rollouts for some Insiders:
#1 Best Overall
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
- An explorer.exe crash that could occur when closing apps from the taskbar.
- A crash when opening the Start menu.
- A memory leak after certain notifications.
Separately, Microsoft said the update removed the NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse registry key. This change was available to everyone in the Beta Channel; Microsoft linked the change to its domain-join hardening guidance in KB5020276.
What known issues remained?
Microsoft was still working on a fix for explorer.exe crashes when interacting with archive files. It also reported that File Explorer could crash when opening Home for some Insiders coming from the previous flight. These were issues reported with this Beta build, not claims that all Windows 11 users would encounter the same crashes.

Work around a crash when File Explorer opens to Home
If File Explorer could not launch because it was set to open Home, Microsoft suggested opening a specific folder through the Run dialog instead:

- Enter the path of a folder you want to open, then press Enter.
Who received KB5041876, and what does the rollout toggle do?
KB5041876 was released to the Windows 11 Insider Beta Channel for the 22635 build line, based on version 23H2. The toggle labeled “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” provided an early path to the listed gradual-rollout changes. With it disabled, features would arrive gradually as Microsoft made them ready. Even with it enabled, staged rollout meant a feature might not appear on a particular device at once.

Are these features guaranteed to ship in Windows?
No. Microsoft cautioned that Beta Channel experiences are previews: features can change, be removed, or never ship beyond Windows Insiders. Control Feature Rollout lets Microsoft begin with a subset of Insiders and expand availability while monitoring feedback. Microsoft also noted that some features in development might not yet be fully localized.
