Yes, you need a vehicle permit to enter a Kansas state park. For one visit, a daily permit covers one day at the park where you buy it. A standard annual permit covers unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas state parks during the calendar year. Kansas vehicle owners can also request a State Parks Passport through vehicle registration; it is an annual option with different purchase and expiration terms.
What each Kansas park permit covers
| Option | What it covers | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Daily vehicle permit | Vehicle entry to the specific Kansas state park for which it is purchased | One day |
| Standard annual vehicle permit | Unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas state parks | Calendar year |
| Kansas State Parks Passport | Unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas state parks | Until the vehicle registration expires |
The permit requirement is based on the vehicle entering the park, not on how many people ride in it. The Passport is non-transferable, and it is not automatically added during registration: Kansas vehicle owners must request it.
How the daily permit works
A daily permit is tied to one park and one day. At Clinton State Park, visitors can buy one from a gate attendant or the park office; groups can also arrange to pre-purchase daily vehicle permits. Purchase arrangements may differ by park, so check the specific park’s instructions before traveling.

Annual permit and Passport: the practical differences
Standard annual vehicle permit
The standard annual permit is the straightforward choice for a vehicle that will visit Kansas state parks during the calendar year. KDWP describes it as allowing unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas state parks. The agency lists purchase through a KDWP office or vendor.
#1 Best Overall
- Full-color topographic maps provide information on everything from cities and towns to historic sites, scenic drives, recreation areas, trailheads, boat ramps and prime fishing spots
- Extensively indexed
- Handy latitude/longitude overlay grid for each map allows you to navigate with GPS
- Inset maps provided for major cities as well as all state lands
Kansas State Parks Passport
The Passport is for Kansas vehicle owners and is obtained through the vehicle-registration process. KDWP says it can be requested at a motor vehicle registration office, online through ikan.ks.gov, or by mail. It remains valid until that vehicle’s registration expires, rather than for a calendar year, and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
Displayed prices and an important current-fee caveat
KDWP pages available on October 4, 2026 display the amounts below. They should be treated as displayed figures, not a confirmed 2026 fee schedule: the agency’s fee-page excerpt labels its table 2025, and another indexed KDWP fee document appears to show season-dependent amounts. Confirm the current charge with KDWP or the park before buying or planning around a price.
Rank #2
| Permit | Displayed amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Daily vehicle permit | $5 | Displayed by KDWP; current 2026 fee not confirmed |
| Standard annual vehicle permit | $25 | Displayed by KDWP; current 2026 fee not confirmed |
| Kansas State Parks Passport | $15.50 | Displayed on KDWP’s Passport page; current 2026 fee not confirmed |
| Senior/disabled daily permit | $3.25 | Displayed by KDWP; eligibility and purchase-channel rules apply; current fee not confirmed |
| Senior/disabled annual permit | $13.75 | Displayed by KDWP; eligibility and purchase-channel rules apply; current fee not confirmed |
Because current fees are not reconciled across the available KDWP materials, do not use these displayed amounts to calculate a break-even number of park visits.
Reduced-price permits: who qualifies and where to buy
KDWP lists reduced-price daily and annual permits for Kansas residents who are at least 65, and for people with qualifying state-issued disability plates or placards. The reduced-price permits must be purchased through a KDWP office or vendor; they are not available as part of vehicle registration. Confirm the required proof and current price with the agency or seller.
Choose the option that fits your visit
- One park for one day: A daily permit matches that use. Check whether the park sells it at the gate, office, or another listed channel.
- Several park visits within a calendar year: Compare the standard annual permit’s calendar-year coverage with the daily charges for your planned visits, using verified current prices.
- Kansas vehicle owner renewing registration: Consider requesting the Passport through registration, while accounting for its registration-linked expiration and non-transferability.
- Potential senior or disability discount: Check eligibility and buy through a KDWP office or vendor rather than vehicle registration.
Camping requires a separate permit
A vehicle entry permit does not pay for an overnight stay. KDWP says an overnight camping permit is required in addition to the vehicle permit.
