Neither Kamatera nor Hetzner is a universal winner. The better fit depends on your workload, required region, operating system and the full monthly bill. Kamatera emphasizes configurable servers, minute-based hourly billing and Windows options; Hetzner offers shared and dedicated cloud resource classes alongside infrastructure add-ons. Compare a specific configuration and its operating costs—not headline starting prices or provider marketing claims.

Kamatera vs Hetzner at a glance

Decision factor Kamatera Hetzner Cloud
Resource model Configurable cloud servers; the pricing page’s Basic example lists 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe SSD and 5 TB traffic. Shared plans include cost-optimized and regular-performance categories; dedicated general-purpose servers provide dedicated CPU resources.
Published entry or example configuration The official pricing page lists servers starting at $4/month and gives the Basic example above. This is a vendor-published starting price, not a matched comparison. On October 6, 2026, Hetzner announced CPX02 with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB storage. Its current price must be checked on the live pricing page.
Billing and variable charges The pricing page says hourly servers are billed by the minute. It lists additional traffic at $0.01/GB and additional storage at $0.05/GB/month. Hetzner says servers are billed while they exist, even when not actively used. Public IPs and other add-ons may affect the bill; check the selected product’s current terms.
Locations Official product information describes a global network, but the pricing page reviewed does not establish a precise current location list. Current product material lists Germany, Finland, the United States and Singapore. Availability varies by plan; CPX02 was announced for FSN1, HEL1, NBG1 and SIN.
Operating systems The pricing page lists Linux options as well as Windows Server and Windows Desktop. Hetzner focuses on Linux support. Users may install Windows themselves, but Hetzner says it does not support that setup.
Infrastructure features Listed products include cloud servers, cloud desktop, virtual private cloud, firewall, load balancers and block storage. Listed cloud features include networks, firewalls, backups, snapshots, floating IPs, block storage, object storage and load balancers.

Provider features, prices and plan availability can change. The figures above are vendor-published details, not independent tests or a guarantee of what a particular deployment will cost.

Which provider is cheaper?

There is no defensible price winner without a workload and region to price. Kamatera’s listed $4/month starting price and its Basic example do not establish that it costs less than an equivalent Hetzner server. Hetzner’s newly announced CPX02 has the same stated vCPU, RAM and storage quantities as Kamatera’s Basic example, but that alone does not make them equivalent: the storage type, traffic allowance, location, resource sharing and add-ons must also be matched.

Build a monthly estimate for the configuration you actually need, including:

  • Compute class, vCPU allocation and RAM.
  • Storage type and capacity, plus any volumes or extra storage.
  • Expected outbound traffic and any included allowance.
  • Public IPv4, backups, snapshots, load balancers and other required add-ons.
  • The region required for latency, data-residency or compliance reasons.
  • How long the server will exist, including idle or powered-off periods.

Kamatera’s pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists $0.01/GB for additional traffic and $0.05/GB/month for additional storage; these vendor-posted rates can change. Hetzner’s documentation says cloud servers do not include public IPs by default, IPv6 Primary IPs are free and IPv4 Primary IPs carry an additional monthly charge. The documentation page was last changed in 2022, so its historical €0.50/month IPv4 figure should not be treated as current without verification.

How do their compute options differ?

Kamatera: configure around the server you need

Kamatera’s official pricing material describes configurable servers and a calculator for building a configuration. Its Basic example is 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe SSD and 5 TB traffic with Ubuntu. That example can help frame a small workload, but check the live calculator for the exact region, operating system, billing duration and included resources you intend to use.

Hetzner: choose shared or dedicated resources

Hetzner separates shared cloud server categories, including cost-optimized and regular-performance plans, from dedicated general-purpose servers with dedicated CPU resources. The appropriate category depends on whether predictable, dedicated CPU capacity matters for your application. A plan label or vCPU count alone does not establish performance parity with another provider.

Hetzner announced its CPX02 Regular Performance server on October 6, 2026, with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB storage in FSN1, HEL1, NBG1 and SIN. Check the live cloud pricing page for its current price and terms before treating it as an alternative to any other plan.

Which one fits your region and operating system?

Choose by location, not just provider footprint

Hetzner’s current product material lists Germany, Finland, the United States and Singapore, while individual plans are not necessarily available in every location. The CPX02 announcement names FSN1, HEL1, NBG1 and SIN. Kamatera’s product information describes a global network, but the reviewed pricing page does not provide a verified, precise current location list. Confirm that the exact plan is available where your users or data need it; a broad geographic claim is not a substitute for a region-level check.

Windows can settle the choice

If you need a provider-listed Windows Server or Windows Desktop option, Kamatera explicitly lists both among its operating system choices. Hetzner focuses on Linux support; although users can install Windows themselves, Hetzner says it does not support that configuration. Confirm licensing, image availability and support responsibility before deployment.

What should you compare beyond compute?

Both providers list infrastructure features that can change the real cost and operational fit. Kamatera lists virtual private cloud, firewalls, load balancers and block storage among its products. Hetzner lists networks, firewalls, backups, snapshots, floating IPs, block storage, object storage and load balancers. Feature names alone do not prove that implementation, limits or pricing are equivalent, so check the current terms for the specific services you will use.

Billing behavior also matters for temporary environments. Kamatera says hourly servers are billed by the minute. Hetzner says a server is billed while it exists even if it is not actively used. If you plan to stop and restart a server rather than delete it, verify how the chosen service handles compute charges, storage and attached resources.

Does either provider have a performance advantage?

The available evidence does not establish a controlled, workload-matched independent benchmark comparing Kamatera with Hetzner. There is therefore no sound basis here for declaring either provider faster or better-performing overall. Performance depends on the selected plan, resource sharing, region, storage, network path and application workload.

Hetzner’s product page claims it wins on price-performance and says its comparison uses Sparecores benchmark data. That is Hetzner’s own claim, not an independent Kamatera-versus-Hetzner test presented here. Treat it as a vendor statement rather than a universal result.

How to make a fair comparison

  1. Define the workload. Record the application’s CPU, memory, storage, traffic and uptime needs, and whether it requires dedicated CPU capacity.
  2. Choose the required geography. Check the exact region and plan at each provider. Do not assume every plan is available in every advertised location.
  3. Match the configuration. Compare equivalent resource classes and include storage type, capacity and traffic allowances—not just vCPU and RAM.
  4. Add operating requirements. Include the needed OS, licensing, backups, public IPs, firewall, network, volumes and load balancing.
  5. Estimate the actual billing period. Account for hourly or monthly billing, idle time, storage and traffic charges, and confirm current rates and service terms on each provider’s live pages.
  6. Test your application if performance is decisive. Use the same application workload and comparable configurations in the regions you would deploy. A generic plan specification or provider claim cannot substitute for that result.
