The Kali NetHunter App Store is a maintained, security-focused Android app catalog—not a general replacement for Google Play. Kali Linux launched it as a public beta on 15 July 2019. The store distributes penetration-testing and digital-forensics applications, provides an Android client with update tracking, and supports both rooted phones and stock, unrooted devices. NetHunter features still depend on the phone model, Android ROM, kernel and edition you install.
What the Kali NetHunter App Store is
Kali describes the store as a one-stop shop for security-relevant Android applications. Its catalog is intended for penetration testing, forensics and related security work. The service lets you browse applications, install them and track available updates; its About description also mentions news and reviews.
The Android client began as a modified F-Droid implementation. Kali said it removed F-Droid telemetry code and expanded the inclusion policy to permit proprietary applications. That makes NetHunter Store a curated security-software distribution channel, not a second general-purpose Android marketplace.

The public-beta announcement is historical. It reported support for more than 50 devices in July 2019; that number should not be treated as the present total. NetHunter remains maintained: the official NetHunter package page lists version 2026.2, build 2026061000, added 25 June 2026, with Android 5.0 or newer support for the package.
#1 Best Overall
The package page describes the app as an installer, updater and interface for the Kali Linux chroot. In other words, the store and the NetHunter application are related but distinct: the store supplies security apps, while the NetHunter package provides the NetHunter environment and its management interface.
Can you use NetHunter without root?
Yes. Kali’s Rootless edition is designed for stock, unrooted Android and does not require voiding the phone’s warranty. Rootless is not equivalent to the full NetHunter experience: capabilities vary with the edition, device image, kernel and Android ROM.
Documented Rootless software setup
The Rootless documentation uses the NetHunter Store app to install three components:

- Termux, which supplies the terminal environment used by the Rootless installation.
- NetHunter KeX, the client for the graphical Kali desktop session.
- Hacker’s Keyboard, which provides a keyboard layout suited to terminal and security tools.
Follow the instructions for your specific NetHunter image and Android release rather than assuming that a Rootless install enables hardware-dependent functions. Wireless injection, USB attacks, a chroot-backed desktop and other advanced features may require a supported device, kernel or a different NetHunter edition.
Is the NetHunter Store safe?
Use the managed distribution path whenever possible. The official package page warns that direct APK downloads do not provide update notifications and are less secure, and recommends installation through the F-Droid client. Managed installation gives you an update path instead of leaving you responsible for checking and replacing a sideloaded APK.
- Install the F-Droid client from a source you can verify, then obtain the NetHunter Store through that client when the documentation directs you to do so.
- Keep the store, NetHunter components and Android itself updated.
- Install only applications you understand and have permission to use. Penetration-testing tools can affect systems, networks and accounts.
- Check the application and image documentation before granting root, accessibility, VPN, storage, USB or wireless permissions.
The store’s removal of F-Droid telemetry code is a stated design difference, not a guarantee that every application in the catalog has identical privacy behavior. Review each app’s permissions, source availability and developer information.

Which phones support Kali NetHunter?
Compatibility is selective and image-specific. The current NetHunter image index reports 123 supported device models on the page crawled in 2026, but that figure is an aggregate and does not mean every model supports every feature or Android version.
NetHunter Pro documentation names devices including PinePhone, PinePhone Pro, Poco F1, OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, Nothing Phone 1 (pre-release and not tested), Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and SHIFT6mq. Kali’s 2025.4 release notes also add Android 16 support for Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, S10 Plus and S10 5G models running LineageOS 23, including CAN and internal wireless-injection support.
What to verify before choosing a phone
- The exact model number and regional variant.
- The required Android version and ROM, such as the documented LineageOS build.
- Whether the available image is Rootless, rooted NetHunter, or NetHunter Pro.
- Kernel support for the hardware features you actually need.
- Whether the image is tested; “pre-release/not tested” listings should not be treated as production-ready compatibility.
A OnePlus 6 is an officially listed NetHunter Pro device, but buying that model alone does not guarantee support: you still need the matching image, ROM and kernel.

How to install the NetHunter Store on Android
- Identify your edition and device. Decide between Rootless, a rooted NetHunter image and NetHunter Pro, then read the instructions for the exact phone, ROM and Android version.
- Use the managed installation route. Obtain the NetHunter Store through the F-Droid client as recommended on the official package page. Avoid treating a standalone APK as the normal update path.
- Install the required components. For Rootless, use the store to install Termux, NetHunter KeX and Hacker’s Keyboard, then complete the Rootless documentation’s setup sequence.
- Complete edition-specific configuration. Rooted and Pro installations may require an image, compatible kernel, bootloader changes or other device-specific steps. Do not apply instructions for one model to another.
- Update and test incrementally. Launch the NetHunter interface, update installed packages through the managed client, and test only the features supported by your image and permissions.
If an app or feature is missing, first check the catalog policy, your Android version and the image documentation. A missing capability is often a compatibility or edition limitation rather than a store malfunction.
NetHunter Store compared with Google Play and F-Droid
| Criterion | NetHunter App Store | Google Play | F-Droid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary catalog focus | Security, penetration-testing and forensics applications | General Android applications and games | Free and open-source Android applications |
| Root requirement | Store use does not inherently require root; NetHunter features vary by edition | Generally usable without root | Generally usable without root |
| Telemetry/privacy handling | Kali said its client removed F-Droid telemetry code | Google Play services and app-level practices vary | Uses the standard F-Droid client and repository model |
| Proprietary applications | Inclusion policy was widened to allow proprietary applications | Supports proprietary applications subject to Google policies | Catalog policy centers on free and open-source software |
| Updates | Browse, install and track updates; managed installation is recommended | Google Play update management | F-Droid update management |
| Device compatibility | NetHunter app support starts at Android 5.0, while advanced functions are image-, ROM- and kernel-specific | Varies by app and Android version | Varies by app and Android version |
These stores can coexist. Google Play remains the broad consumer marketplace; F-Droid is a general free/open-source catalog; NetHunter Store narrows its selection toward Android security work and NetHunter tooling.

The store installs but a NetHunter feature does not work
Check the edition, device image, kernel and ROM first. Rootless installations deliberately expose fewer hardware-level functions than a compatible rooted or Pro setup.
Best Value
You sideloaded an APK and receive no update notice
This is expected according to the package page’s warning. Move to the F-Droid-managed installation route so the client can provide update notifications.
Your phone is not listed
Do not substitute a vaguely similar model. NetHunter images are model-specific; wait for an image that names your exact device or choose a documented supported phone.
An application is unavailable in the catalog
The store is curated and its inclusion policy is security-focused. A proprietary application may be allowed in principle, but inclusion is not guaranteed. Kali invites Android security developers to submit APKs or source repositories for consideration.
The Bottom Line
The NetHunter App Store started as a 2019 public beta and is still maintained in 2026. It is most useful when you need a curated security-app catalog and managed updates; choose the NetHunter edition and phone based on documented image, ROM and kernel compatibility, not on the store name alone.
