It is intended as a specialist security-work environment—not as the easiest first Linux desktop. Kali’s documentation expects users to already know Linux and recommends that first-time Kali users begin in a virtual machine.
What Kali Linux is used for
Kali packages tools and configuration for security work, including penetration testing, security auditing, computer forensics, reverse engineering, vulnerability management, security research, and red-team testing. As the project puts it, “Kali Linux is an open-source, Debian-based Linux distribution which allows users to perform advanced penetration testing and security auditing.” Kali Linux Documentation
Installing Kali does not supply the expertise or authorization to perform security testing. Use its tools only on systems you own or have explicit permission to assess.
Is Kali Linux right for you?
Kali’s suitability guidance is aimed at experienced penetration testers and assumes prior Linux familiarity. The project does not recommend it as a general-purpose desktop for people unfamiliar with Linux or for routine tasks such as gaming, web design, or general development. #1 Best Overall
If you are new to Kali, the project recommends starting in a virtual machine. A VM lets you explore Kali without replacing your host operating system, and it supports snapshots for returning to an earlier state. It is the project’s suggested starting point, not a requirement for every user or deployment.
Choose how to run Kali
The right format depends on whether you want a permanent installation, a temporary boot session, isolation, portability, or deployment on a particular device. Kali offers installer and live images, prebuilt virtual machines, ARM and NetHunter options, cloud images, and containers; its FAQ also describes bare-metal installation and WSL. Rank #2
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-offs to know |
|---|---|---|
| Installer image | Installing Kali to a computer’s storage | Kali calls this the recommended image and advises choosing it if you are unsure. It includes local package copies for offline installation. It creates an installed system rather than a temporary live session. |
| NetInstaller | Installing while downloading packages from the network | Requires a network connection during setup and may take longer. Kali describes it as useful when you want the latest package state at installation time or a smaller initial image. |
| Live image | Booting Kali from removable media without first changing the installed OS | Useful for a temporary session; disk operations can be slower when running from the storage media. It is distinct from the installer image. |
| Prebuilt virtual machine | Trying Kali in VMware or VirtualBox, or working in an isolated environment | Offers isolation and snapshots, but has higher system requirements than installer images and less direct access to hardware. |
| ARM image or NetHunter | Supported ARM devices or supported Android devices, respectively | ARM images are device-specific because architectures vary. NetHunter is an Android-based option for supported devices; check the current device list rather than assuming compatibility. |
| Cloud image or container | Cloud deployments or running Kali within a host system | Containers do not provide direct hardware access, and inbound connections to tools may take extra configuration. |
For image details, see Kali’s image selection guide and the official download page. Image availability and release numbers change; check the live download page for the current choices.
Download and verify the image before using it
Get Kali images and their verification data through the project’s official sources. Kali warns that an unofficial image could be modified to include exploits or malware, so do not boot or install an image until you have checked it. Kali’s official-image download and verification instructions
Rank #3
- Download the image from Kali’s official download page.
- Obtain the checksum and signature information from the official source specified for that image.
- Follow Kali’s instructions to verify the signed checksum file with GPG, then compare the image’s SHA256 value with the official value.
- If verification fails or the values do not match, do not boot or install the image; download it again from an official source and verify it before use.
Hardware requirements and installation cautions
Kali’s hard-disk installation guide covers amd64 (x86_64) systems and says Kali can run on UEFI and older BIOS systems. Requirements depend on what you install. The figures below are Kali Linux Documentation’s published configuration guidance, dated 2025: hard-disk installation guide.
| Installation profile | RAM | Disk |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal SSH server, no desktop | 128 MB; 512 MB recommended | 2 GB |
Default Xfce desktop with the kali-linux-default metapackage |
Aim for at least 2 GB | 20 GB |
These are configuration baselines, not a guarantee of smooth performance for every tool, workload, or virtual-machine host. The installation guide warns that disk setup can erase existing data, so back up important files before installing.

Updates and security configuration
Kali describes itself as a rolling distribution, with updates released as they become available. The project also generates and tests fresh point-release images quarterly, so a downloaded image may not represent the latest package state. Check the official download page for current image and checksum information rather than relying on an old release number.
Kali says network services are disabled by default and its custom upstream-based kernel is patched for wireless injection. These are project configuration details, not a guarantee that every system is secure regardless of the user’s configuration or behavior. Kali’s suitability guidance

Does Kali require a paid book?
No. Kali itself is free. Kali Linux Revealed is an optional learning resource listed on the project’s Kali Training and resources page; it is not required to download or use the distribution.
