A Kahoot game PIN may no longer be enough to join. When the host enables 2-Step Join, participants must also match a changing visual pattern on the host’s screen; Kahoot also identifies CAPTCHA as part of its bot-prevention measures. That helps explain why older methods built around submitting a PIN and joining immediately may fail, though Kahoot does not publish the workings or success rates of its defenses.
Why PIN-only methods can fail
A PIN identifies the game, but it may not complete the join process. With 2-Step Join enabled, a participant must enter the PIN and then tap or click four tiles in the pattern displayed on the host’s screen. Kahoot says that pattern refreshes about every 10 seconds and makes it harder for unwanted players and most bots to join.
Kahoot also lists https://captcha.kahoot.it/ as a service used to prevent bots from joining games and help keep sessions safe. Together, these documented checks mean that a method relying only on immediate PIN-based joining may not work when the additional verification applies.

It does not identify a particular technical change as the reason an individual script or service stopped working. The phrase “most bots” is qualitative, not a published percentage.

What hosts can do when unwanted players appear
Kahoot’s advice is to add friction to joining and use the host controls available during the session. These steps reduce risk; they are not a guarantee that every unwanted join will be prevented.
1. Enable 2-Step Join
Turn on the additional join check before or during a live game if you are concerned that the PIN has been shared or unwanted players may join. Players will need to match the changing pattern shown on the host screen after entering the PIN.

- Not limited to line-of-sight transmission. The most reliable and scalable offering available.
- Complete with 32 clickers, RRRF-01 USB receiver, quickstart guide, shortcut key, batteries, software
2. Use the nickname generator
The nickname generator avoids free-form participant-entered names, which can make arbitrary or inappropriate entries less likely and suspicious participants easier to spot.
3. Moderate the lobby
Check the lobby before starting and remove suspicious or inappropriate participants. This requires host attention, particularly if entries appear while players are joining.

4. Lock the game when appropriate
Locking the game restricts further access once the intended participants have joined. It is useful when you no longer need additional players to enter.
5. Report suspected account or security misuse
If the incident may involve misuse of an account or credentials, or another security incident, Kahoot’s Terms instruct users to promptly notify support.

How the controls differ for hosts
| Control | What it changes | Host workload |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Step Join | Adds a changing visual check after the PIN | Set it up; participants complete the check |
| Nickname generator | Replaces free-form participant nicknames | Review entries and identify suspicious players |
| Lobby removal | Lets the host remove suspicious participants | Requires monitoring and action |
| Game lock | Restricts additional joining | Choose when to stop admitting players |
Kahoot’s published guidance does not rate these options against one another or provide comparative effectiveness figures. The practical choice depends on whether you need to make entry harder, reduce name discretion, remove visible problem participants, or stop new entries.

Why attempting to bypass the checks is not a safe fix
Kahoot’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits accessing its services by automated, unethical, or unconventional means and separately prohibits activity that disrupts or interferes with its services, servers, or networks. Its Terms and Conditions, effective March 12, 2025, require use for intended and permitted purposes; a breach may lead to account suspension or termination.
